Basics of the 1 step drill

I will try to briefly describe it for you. (you can even practice this at home, but do not try to slide). If you are at the lanes, you will only be taking one step (slide step), so you should set up just behind the foul line.

Place your slide foot directly in front of your back foot (slide heel touching toe of back foot), with the back leg slightly bent (more than the slide leg). Your weight should be on the back leg, you should be able to lift your slide leg without losing balance.

Your elbows should be just in front of your hips. ball approximately waist high, hands in front (non-bowling hand supporting most of the ball weight), wrist straight (not cupped).

Shoulders directly over the balls of your feet, slightly ahead of your hips.

(Lead, push-away, whatever term you prefer) Start the ball into a swing allowing it to swing freely and naturally. When it reaches the top top of the swing, slide the slide foot forward transferring your weight to this foot.

The tendency is to start into the slide before the ball is at the top of the swing, and then you have to muscle the swing to stop the backswing, and pull the ball into the release (exactly what you are doing). Wait until the ball stops naturally at the top, then the downswing will be free and natural. By using only one step you can get a feel for what the proper timing and release should feel like.
