Slaying the Monster

My trios team belongs to a league with no entering team cap average. Any team can join and some of them are basically super teams. My little modest 585 average team (league average is about 615) goes up against some teams who average 690, 675, 665 and so on. The 690 team is spotting us around 90+ pins.

Even at those handicap pin numbers, trying to defeat a super team can be difficult to overcome when you see then throw strike after strike. But that's just all in your head. Is your team really at a huge disadvantage. I don't think so.

Our league is a 90% of 240 handicap. So every ten pins in average that the super team is above us, they only get one pin. In reality the super team is only get spotted about 10 more then us. That's really not that many to overcome from the start.

Also take into account that it's much harder for a 230 average bowler to bowl 30-40 pins over their average than a 190 average bowler.

Next time you bowl a super team and see then throw strike after strike (that's what they have to do to keep a 230 avg.), the more they spare means that they can't string strikes and if they can't string strikes, they can't get to their average. And if they open only once or twice, they just gave you the game.

On the other hand, the super team already knows the above. They know if they string strikes together they'll probably win but if they see you string strikes, they'll feel that they can't compete with you and become demoralized and beaten. How 'bout that.

So next time you bowl againist a super team, remember that the playing field is pretty level when the game is started. Don't feel that they are too powerful a team to overcome. Feel confident, keep the game close and you'll do just fine.
