    Here's example (thanks to striketheory).

The bottom picture shows how the ball was actually drilled, and the appearance of the offset is from the variance in span.

    From Mo:
You are drilling into a sphere. Offsetting the thumb only changes the lateral pitches of the fingers. That's math. It's spherical geometry.

OK, I stand corrected. In the early sixties, when I was a kid working in a pro shop, the guy I was working for had drilled a couple of these and drilled them with a semi span for the ring finger. So, based on that experience, I have always been under the belief that, that was the correct drilling. Again, after doing some googling, I stand corrected.

As far as the question in regards to the ring finger being longer than the middle finger, I only suggested that, "it could be" that the ball was drilled for a lefty. (a presumption without seeing the ball). I do not drill balls for a living so I will defer to someone that does.

I just had a ball drilled incorrectly, it did not feel right and I knew something was wrong. I wonder how many people actually get their equipment drilled wrong, and don't even realize it.
Since it may be their first ball, and that's all they have ever used, (except a house ball), they think it's right, because it was done by a "pro" shop.
Maybe the person who used that ball is missing a finger.
