Default AC went out at the House

Just my luck, it is 99 degrees out and the AC at the house up and dies. Probably won't be able to get ahold of anyone to come look at it till monday. Just what I needed was to put about a few hundred/thousand bucks into repairing or replacing that. So looks like I will be propped in front of a fan the next couple days dripping in sweat.

Not sure where you are, Ursus, but here in NE Pennsylvania we will hit the hundreds a few days this coming week, it would appear. Can't stand the heat.....

Sounds like central air. Have you checked the fuses outside on for the unit? Most areas have codes requiring redundancy faults meaning fuses outside and circuit breaker(s) inside. They usually have two fuses outside about 1/4" in diameter and 2" long or so. If you don't have an ohmmeter most home improvement places will check the fuses if you ask.

It was making noise but the compressor wasn't turning so I just shut it off. If it was a fuse I don't think it would probably be making any noise like that.

No it wouldn't. I was hoping it would be a cheap, easy fix for you. Sorry.

Turns out the capaciter went bad. They patched it up so it is cooling a little but said that it put a lot of stress on the motor and that it probably wouldn't last a week. So taking the big hit and getting a new system installed tomorrow (OUCH!!!!). Got 22 years out of the old one so I knew the day was coming but it is still a big hit to the wallet that I didn't need.

Ouch indeed if you have to have a complete new system installed
luckily so far I've got 24 years out of this system here. The only
things that I've had to have fixed on it is the blower motor replaced
and the little fan motor the one on top replaced and I've had to have
it charged up 3 times with freon. The only reason it had to be charged
up two times before was when they installed it they didn't check to make
sure all of the caps were on and that all the sharader(sp)? valves were on
    tight.

It had one valve that was leaking very, very, very, slowly and when they guy
came out the third time several years later he found it and replace the valve
and put a cap on it and it has been working great ever since then and that has
been well over 2 years ago.

OH Noooooooooo I guess I just jinxed myself by saying that. LOL!!!!
