Default Fingertip: does the knuckle go in or not?

Just got a new ball drilled by new driller and the ring finger, with knuckle all the way in is kind of cramped. Am I supposed to leave the knuckle outside?

It goes up to the knuckle but the knuckle itself does not go in.

If it is a conventional grip you go up to the second knuckle. If its a fingertip grip, the first knuckle stays out.
