Pearl / Solid

I should know this i'm sure but, what are the differences between a pearl and a solid? what makes it a pearl? and when should you really be using either?

and what do you prefer?

a pearl has polish on it witch will amke it get down the lane abit easyer then a solid.

a solid is dull and will catch the lane befor a pearl will.

you should use a soild on like the fresh oil and abit after but when the oil started to burn out then you could switch over to a pearl but u cna also throw a solid on dry uwill just have to adjsut.

me i perfer to throw solid balls but if i have to throw a pearl i will i get 2 in my bowling bag out of 4 one for med oil and one or lights oil.

NOPE! Their not just dull or polished balls.

A "Pearl" is a reactive ball that has a additive in the coverstock like Mica or other ingredient , that reduces the coefficient of friction of the ball. Which gives it more length on drier lanes and retains more stored energy. They can be polished or dull if you want.

A "Solid Reactive" isn't just a dull ball. It can can be shiny, dull and anywhere in between. Solids don't have a additive like pearls do and they have a higher coefficient of friction, which causes it to hook sooner than a pearl reactive ball.

Solids tend to be more for fresher/oilier conditions and Pearls for the drier lower volume conditions.

ok thansk bowl1820 now ik that part i thoguht it was the other way but i thoguth all solid balls are dull cause i have been alot of solid balls and they have been all dullish like sanded or matte coverstock never seen one with polish on it befor

Thanks for clearing it up so a Pearl is more of a "skid flip" kind of ball?

yeah a pearl is a good ball to have for when they lanes dry out mostly when say your playing up the right side and the other 7 people are too its good to hagve a pearl to take the advantage by the 2nd game the lane would be dry

Cool i just learned a little more i always thought solid reactive was made to get an early read with a hard reaction to the pocket. I never really understood the difference all i knew was pearl was meant for dry lanes and solid meant for oil. so i have 2 solids and a pearl in my bag... a defiant, alpha-max and primal impulse which is a bad combo now that in know the difference.

well hot-pocket it could be a bad difference but also could be a good depends on how there drilled think u could get 2 solids the same ball lets say the HHR one could be pin up and one could be pin down they will both do different things.

ok lets say another layout on the HHR both pin down but can still do different things because the layouts are different they will have a different read of the lane and different break point probly but the hook will be different one could be weaker for med oil soo u would stand in the normal spot and the other could be drilled agressive soo u would have to move abit right for rightys and left for leftys to make the ball get down the lane and get its hook. but also the more agressive one will have to thrown probly between 3-8 boards farther out then the weaker one depends on the difference of the layouts.
