Thread: What to use as average?

  1. #1

Default What to use as average?

I finished my one league with a 164 average. Low for me, but these lanes that I bowled on were apparently one of the toughest in the state. I have a league starting tomorrow night but I'm doing it at a different place which has more consistent conditions (a.k.a. super oiled one week and no oil the next) and I'm told the lanes are much better.

Should I use my summer league's average or should I just go in without an average?

You would use the entering average the leagues rules state you use.

So see what that leagues rules are about entering averages are.

As Bowl1820 said it is up to what the league rules say. Almost every league I've been involved with makes new bowlers establish an average the first night whether they have a USBC book average or not.

Here in California we use our book avg for the first 3 weeks, then we use the avg we established over the 9 games. Its suppose to cut down on sandbaggers(Bowlers who purposly bowl below avg to get higher handicap).

Three weeks is the general rule of thumb for leagues regardless of whether you have a book average. As Zoethen stated, it keeps the sandbagging to a limit.

That is what they went with for people new to the leagues. Apparently, the county I'm bowling in has it's own certification from the PBA so if you already have bowled with them, you use that average you've accumulated over the past three years.

I'm kind of excited for this league. This place actually oils their lanes twice a day and they have a machine that actually analyses the oil on the lanes for consistency. This place is legit. I also apparently get a free bowling ball and free lesson from a pro since it's my first PBA sanctioned league.

Good luck in your first league! So you know the 6p league has fresh oil and the 9p league has whats left,so bowling ball reaction will be different.

    What ball are you getting?

    Good luck & good scoring!

Our league uses our book avg. from last season for the first three weeks, to set your avg. If you do not have a book avg. you are setting it with those 9 games (three weeks) Which several here, have already stated.

All three of my leagues do it differently. I don't even worry or think about it, I just show up and bowl

I never realized the the PBA sanctioned league. Mine, including the PBA Experience league, were sanctioned by the USBC.
