Thread: Lofting the ball

    Default Lofting the ball

In our league there is one bowler who lofts the ball very high almost like playing horseshoes.
When it hits the lane surface it makes a loud sound which to me and others is distracting.
I've talked to him and he says he scores higher this way and doesn't want to sacrifice his higher
average by a more conventional roll.
The lanes are synthetic and he claims they are not harmed because of their hardness.
I've asked the house manager to ask him to change his style to no avail.
    Any comments or suggestions?

Im not sure about the damage to the lanes or not, but the one thing i will say is that on friday nights i go bowling from 9 til midnight as it is really cheap, and every kid in there is throwing with 2 fingers and all i constantly hear is the smack of the plastic house balls hitting the lane rather hard. It is really distracting as none of them really demonstrate bowler courtesy either. So i completely understand how it can be distracting to you, but on the other hand if the manager doesnt care Im not sure what could be done ya know.

First off lofting the ball dose damage the lanes. If you get on your stomache you might see some ripples on the surface. Thats the ball hitting the lane! We have a bowler in my league who was brought in for his stunning 130 handicap and he's constantly slamming the ball on the lanes(Synthetic and you should see the dents espcially the approach.) We've talk to the president and he said that since their is no rule,he has to let him bowl the way he wants.

A little loft isn't all that bad say a little loft something like what
Mika Koivuniemi does but when you loft way out to or past the
arrows then that is very distracting and on wood lanes is very much
detrimental to the lane surface but its not quite as bad on synthetic
    lanes.

Even though our center uses synthetic lanes and approaches they have
a sign up on the first set of posts between sets of lanes which is maybe
5 or 6 feet past the foul line saying do not loft the ball past that point but
we have this one older lady bless her soul that just started bowling this past
season and for the sake of her she just can not put the ball down smooth at
all and all you hear is kaboom, kaboom, kaboom when she bowls and it sounds
like a bunch of jet planes breaking the sound barrier and it makes me want to
pull out what little bit of hair I have left on my balding head.

I knew someone in high school on the team that lofted the ball nearly halfway down the alley. Somehow he still go it to hook well but he always had trouble on heavier oil.

We have a guy that lofts it close to 30'. He has been doing it that way since being a kid. He is a big, strong dude (obviously), left-handed and averages 215 on a THS. Tournaments, that's another story. We have a county full of house bowlers. I love getting those guys to a tournament and watch them struggle to break 150.

Funny thing is, that guy has spent hours upon hours trying to learn to NOT loft the ball. He finally gave up and just rips the cover off the ball.
