Default back after a long layoff and need new equiptment

I am just coming back to bowling after 14 years...or so. I am using a Danger Zone, but also have a Zone D2Z...OK, these ball are ancient, but they served me well back in the day. I am just getting my rhythm back and I wonder if I could get some advise. The balls that I'm using are 16lb, but I see many use a lighter ball. Is this something I should consider? Are there advantages to going lighter? I've just always thrown a 16lb ball and never thought about going lighter, but before I buy a new ball, I'd like to hear some feedback on that. Also, considering what I am used to throwing, what current ball/balls might suit me? I like the consistancy of the original Zone, but often times need the later break of the D2Z.

I figure there's got to be somebody on this site that remembers those balls and can help me out!

    Thanks!!

well i dont think there is much of a difference i think people are just going down in weight because its easyer to throw and you are able to put more rev on it i use to throw 15-16lb balls i went to 14lb cause of wrist issues but still have a 15lb ball with me always to test my wrist and see if im able to go abck to 15lb's.

but a ball that you should get depends on witch brand you want to throw but since you are jsut starting out again after 14years alot of things have changed soo if anything you should go back to the basic start with a entry lvl ball my favourie is the c300 freeze drilled pin down works great, then you will use it for abit improve abit then get into more agressive bowling balls just you pick there alls kinds of brands but DV8 is a goo brand and lots of people on ehre like it soo i do but i dont have a misfit witch is a entry lvl ball.

Let's see, 14 years ago I was still throwing my Ebonite Signature bought in 1975. Come to think of it I was still using it in 07-08. So no I don't any Zone experience.

How are these balls reacting now, at least on the shots where your timing is on?

As to weight with some of the high end balls, 16# will not deflect enough and leave you with a string of 9pins left on the deck, 8 pins if you're a lefty.

I to came back after a 12yr absence and found my Rhino pro,pro zones & Bullwhip all crack beyond repair and gave away my Mass Chaos so I could get new equipment and am having fun again. If you can still throw a 16lbs without any wrist problems then by all means use your ball. Most bowlers now a days use 15 as it hits just as hard as a 16 and most companies sell probaly 2-3 times more 15's then 16's. I suggest going to your local pro shop and asking his recommendation, thats what I did and that helped a lot.

    Good luck on your comeback!

If you are looking for a similar reaction in something new the Brunswick Karma is very similar to the Danger Zone and the Karma Pearl will be similar to the DZ2. As far as suggestions otherwise i would suggest talking to your local pro shop as to what is working in your area and for your style. You can also watch local bowlers with similar styles and see what they are throwing and how it reacts
Still love the game but had to quit because of my left leg amptation

Thank you for the tips...all of you have given me something to help me move forward. The Pro Shop in my area thinks the Zones are decent. After new inserts, I am getting back into it. He has suggested that I get my rhythm back and then he will watch me bowl with my Zones before suggesting something more contemporary. I'm still a little perplexed by the 15lb vs 16lb question. It seems to me that everybody used to throw a 16 lb ball, but now most throw 15lb. Anyway, I went from awful (471 series) my first week back to respectable (585 series) my second week. I used to average 205, which I would be perfectly happy with, so hope to keep improving.

Thanks again to those that responded!

The newer balls have more drive through the roll phase than the older balls. The extra pound provided the hitting power needed while now the cores and coverstocks make up the difference.
