I don't care one way or another, but with the dwindling bowling population you would think they would do everything in their power to encourage more people to join.,
I think that its just one more case of organizations, i.e. bowling centers and leagues, not keeping up with change. It seems that the centers are only looking at how much money they would make with the traditional length season without realizing that if they tried different formats they might have more total bowlers.

They have to try something to increase numbers. I really think a lot of it has to do with the economy. When bowling was in it's heyday people worked a single 9-5 weekends off type of job. Now people are working jobs with rotational scheduling and are living paycheck to paycheck. Whole it may only be $10-$20 a week to bowl they may not have that to spare. If they do have the money to spare they may not have the time to join a league.

Just today my wife and I signed up for a $13 a week for 15 week fun league that rewards you with a Tropical Heat at the end. I just got a Tropical Heat from the summer pbax league so I'm going to ask if I can just pay like $9 and just bowl...starts tomorrow!

A somewhat related question - is there a website out there that compiles a list of upcoming leagues so I can see which one is offering the best perks or prices in my area? If not, hmmmm.... I know how to build websites, maybe I'll start one. I want to join a league but unless I want to hit the websites of all 20 some odd bowling centers here in the Phoenix area, I have no idea who is offering what. Plus not everything makes it to their websites. I know the AMF bowling center near me started up a Budweiser league where at the end you get one of those plastic beer balls, which would have been sweet if I had known about it in time to join but I found out about it the day it started and it was already full. So is there anything like that out there or did I just stumble upon a great idea?

Great idea that somebody should be doing.
20 centers? Seriously or is this an exaggeration? Sounds like another good reason to move to me.

As you can see, going to check all of these centers out to see who's doing what league/tournament/event/specials etc would be exhausting. It would be far better to have all this info in one centralized location that a prospective league bowler such as myself could check out and if interested, I could email the center for more info, call them up or visit their website.

I know a guy who runs a webhosting company. I'm going to see what kind of deal he can give me on a domain name and some space for this. I can have something up and running pretty quickly. Maybe a couple weeks.

If you want to move here and don't mind the summer heat, Phoenix is a great place to live! You definitely should come out here for a visit and check it out. Let me know if you do, we can meet up at one of these centers and throw a few games!

I don't understand this distaste for long bowling seasons, if i could i would bowl 52 weeks a year lol if you can't make it to league every week see if the league will allow you to come in and bowl your 3 games ahead of time
    High Game: 246 (300 soon)
    High Series: 627

That practice league sounds really sweet! 21 games plus a ball for only $12 a week??? Do it!!!!

I prefer the longer seasons myself. I am in two scratch leagues right now. One league is $21 per week and is 35 weeks long. The other is $26 per week and is 33 weeks long. They are really competitive and some good money is on the line if you win so we split the leagues up into thirds and quarters and it is pretty fun. We just won the first quarter in one league so we are guaranteed in the roll off at the end of the year!

On the point of time being an issue, my league moved to a different center and the time opening for the league was from 6:30-8:00. So being 4 man teams and the fact there is 10 teams we have extra lanes available we went to 2 teams bowling on 4 lanes. We started off bowling 2 guys form each team on a pair of lanes and then the other 2 guys from each team on the next pair. This worked out alright, but guys were complaining it was tough to keep track of who was winning and half your team was on the other pair so you couldn't socialize much. I didn't mind, my team is a throw together team and 2 of the guys hardly talk anyway. So what we are doing now is 1 team to a pair and all the scores are kept on one side. And then the next pair the team you are facing is on. I feel it is less competitive, but alot of the teams like it for the social factor.

In this setup I wish I was left handed since all my teammates are right handed. It would make adjusting and staying in the line so much easier! I may totally go bowl practice this weekend to see if I can remotely come close to bowling left.
