Thread: Thumb Pitch

    Default Thumb Pitch

I visited the local pro shop that I am bowling at now. I am left handed and I have been complaining and becoming very discouraged because I am still not able to get out of my bowling balls clean. My thumb always feels like it is coming out late. This is a new pro shop guy now because since I made the move to collegiate bowling, I have been bowling at a different alley. He measured the stuff I have and he believes that I am pitched into my palm and that's why I can't stay behind the ball and it's also why I can't get out of the ball clean. He is moving my pitch on one of my bowling balls to 0 to see if that feels any better. He said if 0 does feel better, we will move to 3/8 pitched out. I'm not positive if this is exactly right but I think it is. Since I have 3 balls that I am going to be getting drilled, hopefully I can find something that is comfortable to me. It has been a few years of frustration and I have begun to form bad habits because of this. Any opinions on thumb pitch?

Last yr I switched from 1/4 right,1/4 reverse to 0 pitch because I had over 6 pieces of tape and still dropped the ball. It took about 2 weeks to get used to the snug fit and to relax my thumb. My pro shop did the same thing as your pro shop. It's better to do 1 ball, then you can do the rest the same if it feels good and your happy with the fit. Give it a try and see if it helps.!

Here what I posted in Hammers thread about pitch. See the can picture below.

Here's some reading to get you going. (Not saying this is the only method)

They call this the wiki fit on bowlingchat, if you study this . you can figure your baseline grip yourself. (you might need to tweak it later to fine tune it)

Click for The MoRich Fitting Guide

Click for the Simplified Fan Chart Instructions

    Click for the Thumb_Angle_Pitch_Chart

Click for the Lateral Finger Pitch Fan Chart

Center Line Transposition (CLT) Drilling Instructions

This is old but still should read it
Bill Taylor's Fitting & Drilling A Bowling Ball

    Sample from the wiki:
Lateral pitches can be found with a standard sized beverage can.
For a right hander, negative is left and positive is right pitch.
For a left hander, negative is right and positive is left pitch.
The proper lateral pitch in the image is 0.

(Depending on the size of your hand you might need to use a little smaller can. bowl1820)

I was messing with thumbholes last night and realized that my first ball drilled had the thumb pitch where the bottom of the hole was more pointed toward the finger holes. This made it feel like my thumb had to come out over a cliff.. I dremeled it down and now it feels better.
