My high end balls are very smooth despite being sanded. They just look matte

Smooth to the touch, yes. If you put it under a microscope I'm sure things would look a lot different.

Some years ago I had a Columbia Orange dot that was not smooth. It had a stippled kind of finish that was supposed to make it good on heavy oil. Actually, it was probably the worse ball I have ever owned.

Tweener; PAP= 4.75 over x .75 up/Tilt 10 degrees/Axis of rotation 40 degrees/Revs = 368 and speed is 16.86 MPH average.
I think this has been answered well already, all bowling balls should be relatively smooth, to human touch the difference between 800 and 4000 finish can be nearly unnoticeable, but if you took a microscope to the ball you would see an obvious difference. no, a bowlingball should never feel "rough" it would end up scratching the hell out of the bowling lane.

My old Brunswick ball isn't smooth, there's all sorts of gouges and nicks and scrapes in that bad boy, lol... It's been through some busted ball returns a few too many times methinks.
