Thread: Cover stock question

    Default Cover stock question

I am having issues with my DV8's. It seems to be hitting the pocket and just pushing through where as the Taboo Jet Black explodes the pocket. I've tried different lines and still the same results. Someone said that I might be burning up all the energy before the pocket. So my question is, is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening like taking it up to 4000 polished or something?

Try polishing it or find a lane with oil.

I assume you are talking about the Terror, and Nightmare that you have in your signature. Both balls are stronger than your Hammer. They are heavy oil balls, so maybe the house shot doesn't have as muh oil as you think. It may just be a case of too much ball for the lane conditions

Mister S is correct (lol mr s) putting a heavy oil ball on medium or light conditions will cause them to burn up a lot of energy before reaching the dry part of the lane resulting in a weak hit.

I would try 4000 with polish and see if that works! It also depends on how much oil they lay down. You can have a 41'+ pattern with light oil, depends on if your bowling a Sport(Keigel or PBA)pattern and what the oil lay out is. Most THS are a 38' christmas tree pattern(Light oil @ 5 board build up to heavy oil @ 20 board).

You can also take your weakest ball(Light oil/dry)and see how that works before adjusting coverstock on Terror.

It is all about when the ball transitions from one phase to another. Try to pay attention to when the ball stops skidding, begins to hook and then rolls. If the ball gets into the roll phase too early it exits the pin deck towards the 9 pin, it has been deflected that direction. If it gets into the roll phase too late it will hook past the 8 pin and exit the pin deck in that direction. You want the ball to get into the roll phase at the correct time so that it exits the pin deck between the 8 and 9 pin.

If it is getting into the roll phase too early, try putting some polish on it, getting more side roll on the release or throwing with more ball speed to get it into the roll phase later. If you see it hooking past the 8 pin too much and you leave a lot of 4s and 9s, then get into the roll phase earlier. You can do this by adding more surface on the ball, sanding it. Or by getting more forward roll on the release or throwing a bit slower.

I agree that making the surface less aggressive is a good thing to try, but I would disagree with making two alterations at the same time. I would not try 400 plus polish as a first step. As a matter of fact, I would try the polish with your ball left at 2000 first. If the ball is still burning out, then take the polish off nad go to 4000. If that is still too aggressive, then try the polish. I NEVER make two adjustments at the same time...
