Welcome aboard. Sounds like you are doing quite well. When I started bowling seriously (got a ball and shoes) about 10 years ago, I picked it up really fast too with high numbers like that, but never really bowled in a league or anything serious. I just recently got back into it again. I bowled a 254 the other day practicing, but my league avg this year is 159. Bowling good scores practicing is a lot easier than doing it in a league setting or a tournament. So as far as your scores, sounds like you know how to throw a ball well, but doing it when it counts is a key.
For your friends, sounds like they just need to find a groove and get more consistent. I would be they aren't converting spares as well as you are. Spares=Better Scores, so I would tell them to focus on that first and foremost.
