    Default New Bowler Question

Can someone tell me about the different shapes of hooks? I'm confused.

Can you be more specific as to what you mean by different shapes.

There are basically two shapes for hooks; one is a smooth arc that happens over a relatively long section of lane, the second is a much sharper curve where the ball changes direction much more abruptly, some times referred to as a hockey stick shape.

One is not necessarily better than the other. On some patterns one may have better pin carry than the other but either will strike when you can use it to get the 6 degree entry angle into the pocket.

Some bowlers have trouble throwing the ball with enough consistency to keep a sharp breaking ball in the pocket. The smoother arc is a little more forgiving.

The shape mostly a function of cover stock composition, surface, and core design.
