    Default Help on release

New here and this is my first post. I got in to bowling almost two years ago and only devoted about 2 months to it from then. I had a terrible issue of my thumb sticking and the ball would not come out sometimes. I believe I developed some not so great techniques to try and avoid that and I would like to remedy the problem. I quit bowling for about a year and half and am making an attempt to get back in to it. I got the thumb issue fixed by having the thumb hole sanded so I am good to go there. Where I am having trouble is at the release. From what I have read, my posture is alright and my approach but when I make it to the release point I do not slide. It doesn't feel comfortable to do so and at the end of a couple games my thigh is killing me from all the strain of being upright instead of slightly lower with the slide motion. That is one problem I would like some advice on maybe how to get adjusted but my other problem is lack of revs and hook. Where I bowl, the lanes are synthetic and normally drier than heavy. I have an original taboo for the heavy conditions and do not have that serious of an issue with that ball, but my other ball for medium to dry is a grape vibe. To be honest, I do not know what I am doing wrong. The dry lanes at the alley are killing me. I cannot produce hardly any hook on the ball and I feel as though I am turning my hand into the "hand shake" form correctly. My middle and ring fingers are very sore at the end of then night, maybe they are staying in the ball too long? I just am looking here to get any helpful insight on turning my wrist in the correct motion at the correct time to generate more revs and get the ball to hook. I have this problem with the grape vibe and in the past have not had this issue but I have basically had to relearn bowling from all the bad techniques I had been using from my thumb issue. Once again, any helpful insight would be great and sorry for the long post but I like to be thorough. Thanks.

What line are you trying to play with the Vibe? Are you leaving your thumb in too long? The lack of hook could be a number of things.

If your fingers are hurting you, perhaps your tips are too small?

Its hard to say what's wrong without seeing how you bowl [insert pitch for using a coach, taking lessons here]. Among the most likely possibilities are that your thumb is coming out too late, or that you're turning your wrist too early.

The pain in your fingers could also have a number of potential causes. If the span is too long it can cause pain in the fingers. Or it could be that you are trying too hard to hook the ball and over rotating the fingers. With modern equipment the motion needed to make the ball hook is quite subtle.

Good luck and remember bowling is only supposed to hurt the pins!

I remember the days when I played in a youth league and there was ALWAYS a coach available

Last night I felt like turning around and yelling "COACH!".

I believe my thumb may be coming out too late and also now that I think about it I really have been straining to get the turn on the ball so I may have been overturning my wrist and therefore hurting my fingers. I don't think the finger holes are too small. The guy in the pro shop is literally amazing at getting it right, you may have heard of him..Terry Decker. Anyways, I am working the right side of the lane and trying to get it to hook just enough to hit the head pin but I honestly think I may need to move left some and let it stay in the middle of the lane more to get more hook. I saw some other guys bowling last night that are probably 230 average bowlers and they really turn their wrist hard. It actually looks like it is too much, I think I will try to stay subtle with it but I don't know..sometimes it seems like I don't have this problem and other times its terrible. Very confusing at times.

There's a couple tricks for helping your finger get out a little quicker. Blow air into your thumb hole. The little added moisture will help it get out easier. That's the easiest method and it's free.

I would say the best fix is to NOT use a thumb hole. But then again that is just me

ZBat..... Please post a video of you throwing a few frames from the back as well as the side. It's extremely difficult to coach someone based on a verbal description and it appears that you may have several issues. Your profile doesn't say where you're from so first I'd say ask Terry if he could watch you throw a few balls and offer some advice. Also ask him if there are any certified coaches in your area. Check Bowl.com, they have a full listing of coaches across the country.
