For scratch tournaments I suggest that you wait till your average is 190+. If the tournaments were handicapped and you have a USBC sanctioned average, I'd say go for it now.
My best payout in a tourney was the first year that I was bowling left-handed. I went in with the maximum handicap, shot two games around 150 and also threw a 263 in the singles. Felt guilty that I only bowled about my average in the doubles so that even though we cashed, my partner barely broke even.
