I'm not trying to disrespect your coach. He probably doesn't have a problem with your balance leg because it's not all out of control and I would bet is closer to the ground when you're lower.
However, I do agree with Bob that it SHOULD be on the ground. The reason I believe in this is; it allows for more power through the release while keeping the body in the proper and same position each time, a good, balanced position. It's also easier to duplicate shot after shot. For each 1/2" difference in height of your balance foot from the floor, what is the change to the rest of your body?

Bob, length of time doing anything doesn't mean somebody knows what they're doing. You're an excellent coach so don't degrade your abilities by saying how long it's been. The game has changed and you have changed with it. We both know guys your age whose games and coaching style hasn't changed since the early 70s.
Sorry but I met a ton of morons in the Army that thought they should have my job because they were in longer than me even though I ran circles around them. They also didn't like answering to a soldier with less rank than them but they either got over it or got transferred.

We go about things of you can only think about two things at a time before it's too many things at once. First it was a five step approach from a four step approach. Also a free arm swing, which has been a huge challenge for me. Being behind the ball instead of on top of it. Framing my shot (Which when I focus on, solves my balance issues). He also taught me how to easily shoot ten pins.

It's been a lot of progress. Bigger things first I guess.

He is correct. Two or three tops is usually all the change people can handle at once. Even when I see my own videos and see fifteen things wrong, I try to focus on a few otherwise you spend too much time thinking instead of doing.
The only real difference is I try to have them master everything with their original 4 step before teaching the 5 step. Why? After that it's just adding a step, the rest is the same.

Well, it took me about five minutes to get comfortable switching from a four step to a five step even though I had been doing a four step for about...eight years when I started bowling. That just clicked so it was no big deal.

I had an 8 year old that couldn't start the swing on his first step. I taught him a five step and he has been going great. Took showing him twice and he had it down. Others just get all baffled. Each person is different.
Since switching his average has gone from a 58 to a 135. Half use to be gutter balls to now he gets maybe two a month.
