Gee, too bad no one ever told Don Carter or Amletto Monicelli that. Even Earl Anthony had a slight bend in his arm swing. The bent elbow by itself doesn't cause injuries. The injuries come from the elbow rotating instead of just the wrist / fingers.
As to the original question, he asked you for advice. You gave him your honest opinion and he tried it for a couple of frames. You should be highly flattered, because that's about the best you can hope for. Unless you're actually coaching the person and giving positive feedback when they do it right and gently or not so gently reminding them when they relapse into their old form, most people won't try to act on advice more than once or twice, unless you're telling them to do something that they were already thinking about do anyway!

I intrpret the spirit of the question being should you offer unsolicted advise. The general answer in my case is no, but there are excepitons that I have experienced. I have seen teenagers just "chuck the ball" down lane. If I sense they are open to better form, for example they seem to admire my stroke, I offere simple basics like: as you walk to the pins, push away to the taget, let the ball swing away and back at the target again. Now follow the the ball after release until you can see your arm pointing at the target down lane. That is sometning than can be worked on easily because it has a self check built into it.
That said, there is no reason for frustration at a person for continuing a bad habit after being advised othewise. It is the individual's bowling game, not mine.
I had a similar experince with a guy I saw reqularly when I practices who would take a huge muscled backswing, step forward and down at the same time driving the ball down and into the approach at the point of delivery "BAM". I showed him a supported ball as opposed to one held on top by the fingers, and while he tried unsucessfully to send the ball out and down the lane, a few weeks later he was doing it and evenr getting a little hook on the ball.
So for me if I help, give someting manageable, leave it alone an leave the person to adapt on his/her own.
I live by three simples rules:
1. Don't ever ask about my business
2. Never discuss business at the table
3. Don't ever side with anyone against the family
