Could be any of those things.
Surface prep can do it. Heavier oil on the lanes can do it. Carry down can do it. Your release changing slightly can do it.
Take your pick.
Hey my ball wasn't hooking like normal yesterday could it be the oil on the lanes or could it be the ball needs cleaning and polishing should I polish it before I bowl tonight what could be the issue?

Sara, be sure you wipe the oil off of your ball on EVERY first ball shot. If it's an older ball have the proshop guy take a look at it and see if it needs to be resurfaced. It's usually about $20 and well worth it. That'll help bring it back to the original surface.

Also make certain you are delivering the ball the same way every time. if you change you grip on release, or change your finisih position, it affects how the ball rolls down the lane. You can usually see now much tilt and how much reves you have on the ball by watching the pattern as it spins down lane. If this change, you probably did something different.

How often do you clean your ball? Do you wipe them down after every single shot?
its a new ball I got it this year and tonight it hooked fine when I released it a certain way and I do wipe the oil off the ball after every time the ball rolls down the alley just not when I put the ball up when I am finished eventhough I probably should or should I after yesterday my wrist was hurting really bad so I took some pain meds and that got me through the night and the wrist support I already had plus I didn't try to cup my wrist tonight either until I build up some strength in it either that or it was more relaxed eventhough it was 9 pin no tap I hardly got any 9 pins I mostly got real strikes and spares and some open frames plus I I was nervous cause I bowled the guy I like in my league but it would never work cause his girlfriend came tonight to bowl with him so that was a bummer but he got a 300 with only two 9's as strikes oh well I start bowling summer league next tuesday if they have a team that has room for an extra bowler its bowl for a ball high performance ball I am going to bowl for my mom a ball and me I am going to buy me a new ball for the 10 pin this summer. Anyway what does revs mean? I am kinda new at throwing a hook ball been bowling one for 2 to 3 years one year I didn't bowl cause didn't have a team.

My wife suffers from wrist pain and she has been advised my our coach to use a more cupped wrist position throughout the swing right up to the release point. Unfortunately, she is stuck with the habit of releasing the wrist so her hand is over the ball, midway through the swing and rotating the wrist, not unlike unscrewing a jar, as it passes her body creating a gyroscope efffect. When she tries to force more hook, her wrist hurts. Staying cupped, with index finger pointing at the pins right to the release is her solution. I don't know your situation. It may be different, but that is what she needs, when she is ready to work on it, I think.

Revs= revolutions; the amount a ball spins on it's axis in the skid phase creates a longer skid past the oil pattern storing more energy for the back end. Depending on the axis rotation used it can assist in creating a greater entry angle in to the pocket. How many revs and rotation needed are dictated by lane conditions and the bowler's style.
