Default What's the USBC rule for this if there is one?

Monday is championship night. We are in the championship match. We have seven guys on our team. It's a five man league. The question is, CAN WE ALL BOWL WARMUPS? My back is sore and I don't know how it's going to be on Monday. Last Monday I bowled terrible. My team captain wants me to bowl. I think at least six of us should warm up and then we decide the lineup. Is that legal?

I doubt if there is any thing in the rules about warmups. There probably is a rule specifying that any subs in the championship must have some minimum number of games bowled.

The last month or two of the first season that I bowled and for all of the second, we had 6 men on the roster for a five man team. Most weeks we would all show up and the low man would sit out. All of us would get a chance to warmup. I forget how we determined who sat the first game but if they were had the low score the second game, the bowler with the second lowest score would sit out the last game. That way everyone got to bowl at least 2 games.

There are no USBC rules regarding warm up (Competition hasn't started at point), so unless the league just happened to have a rule against it. I'd say you could do it, then set the line up you want to bowl.

Given if your just worried about how you'll do, I'd say just get there early. Bowl a practice game, see how your back is and go from there. Either bowl or tell them you'll sit it out.

If you do bowl and you find you can't continue after the first game. the captain can replace you at the beginning of the next game.

I talked to my captain and six of us will warm-up. We may change the line-up after the first game too. Thanks for the help!

The biggest question here is "What is the league rule, if any?" Some leagues have strange rules about using subs during rolloffs, yet some don't have any. Theoritically, USBC allows bowlers to start a game and change if due to an injury during the middle of a game. So you could start, throw a few frames and be replaced by one of your subs, if need be.

Years ago, I bowled on a traveling league for a bowling center. We always traveled with 6 guys, and the team captain, would pull a guy out by the 3rd frame and put in our sixth man, for the rest of the nite. Pissed off a lot of guys, but we won a lot of matches.

I think they would be pissed!

That's a USBC rule violation (unless there was a league that allowed it in the middle of the game.) USBC Rule 106b, Item 1, states that once a game has started, no changes to the order can be made after the start of a game.

But they didn't change the order, just faked an injury to get a substitution. Not very ethical by any means.

Okay after looking at the rules again, it appears yes you can sub. part way through a game.
    107c. Substitutes and/or Replacements
    10. Unless otherwise provided by league rules:
    b. A captain may replace any player at any time during a game with another eligible player.
    c. When substitutes are made during a game, the score counts only for team score.

But if it's a handicap league I would wonder if it was done properly.

NOTE: When a substitution is made during a game in a handicap league, each player receives 1/10
of his/her single-game handicap for each frame bowled. For example, an original player with
a single-game handicap of 19 pins completes six frames and a substitute with a single-game
handicap of 22 pins completes the remaining four frames:
    Original player 1/10 of 19 = 1.9 pins x 6 frames = 11.4 or 11 pins. Substitute player 1/10 of
    22 = 2.2 pins x 4 frames = 8.8 pins or 8 pins. The fraction is dropped from each individual’s
    handicap, not from each frame.
In leagues using the team method of handicapping, the same procedure is used. Determine
the team handicap with the original player and with the substitute in the

Well, we didn't win. We lost the first game by less than 10 pins and won the third game by about 50 but they beat us handily the second game. One of their guys had 280. I so badly need a new ball. The ball I was using is about 9 yrs old. I beat the crap out of the pocket but just didn't have the carry. I had 624 and I left a 4-9 the third game in the tenth on a strike.
