Powerlifter checking in. Ive been lifting for 10 years so i dont get sore any more but i do notice that lifting before i bowl does seem to take some speed off my ball. Usually i bowl on my off days as it works out best that way.
Any 'serious' pwer/bb lifters out there?
I'm not planning on entering any events any time soon (ya never know), but I was wondering if anybody out there actually lifts and how do you manage that with your bowling game.
Now I'm not talking about doing Zumba a few times a week, I mean real old school Arnold type of workouts...the kind where when you are deadlifting or squating the bar is bending looking like it is going to snap in half!
I'm really interested in how you work in your recovery...lets face it, hitting legs in the moring crushing out 1100lbs leg presses, then trying to bowl in league latter that night can cause all kinds of strange and wonderful things to happen.....

I can say that I have had to modify some of my routines depending on my bowling schedule. Since I lift in the morning, I can usually recover by the time I have to bowl in the evenings. Deadlift or Squat days just kill me for bowling, mostly due to the huge amount of engery you have to expend to do them worthwhile!
I have found that as long as I keep hydrated (100 oz of water a day) and keep up with my fish oil, my joints are usually O.K.....however, I am not as lucky for the soreness part, it seems that I am in some constant DOMS somewhere all the time!
Oh the silly things we do!
I use to lift six days a week. Now I bowl six days a week. Interesting dilemna.
I use to go so hard that I couldn't even lift a glass of water after a bicep workout. I couldn't imagine trying to bowl those days.
I would do bi's one morning, back that evening. Tris in the morning, chest in the evening. Shoulders in the morning, legs in the evening. Then start again but swap the a.m. and p.m. Abs were every workout.
If I can ever get my elbow and knee repaired I plan to get back into it but not to get huge like before. It's easier to get clothes to fit at 200 lbs compared to 268 lbs.

Ugg...blew my wrist out a few days ago.....carpal tunnel flared up and significant tendonitis...No grip strength and lots of referred pain in the palm. Had a neuro-conduction test yesterday to confirm (NCV) and it wasn't pretty.
Anyhow, no lifting for me for a while until the symptoms go away...hello bike and treadmill...YUCK!
I work out 3 to 4 days a week, don't do the heavy stuff that I did when I was healthy, and YOUNG lol! I weighed 270 then, and played college football! William Jewell college, here in Liberty mo.
I could walk thro doors then, never took the time to open them! Benched 350,,, warmed up with two 45's on each end of the Olympic bar,,, whipped off 12,,, then worked my what up.
Now that I am retired from Iron Work,,, and have had several accidents, and RA,,, ( 64 lol) I work up to 200 and do reps,,15!! My heavy days are over, I am down to 210 now, and have shrunk 1 inch, 6-1 now!
I will work out till the day I can't anymore. I swear its what has kept me going, and (((Did I say I bowled a 300 4 weeks ago)) LOL.... well I did, after a 2 hour work out!
I also do steam, Sana and sometimes the whirlpool! Very relaxing.

Yup...looks like I am going to have to modify some of my lifting routines. Talked to an Orthopedic doc friend of mine and we are working on some different hand positions to help out. Bottom line is that I am going to have to start acting my age...just a little bit :-).
Gonna give it about another week, then see what I can do...tried a few 'light' benches yesterday and felt alright, so we shall see...
It's coming together slowly but surely.....
Still a little tight on the wrist and hand, but I am back to more of a regular routine now. Still a little careful on heavy bench press and chest work since the weight is directly on my palm and wrist, but other than that I'm hammering away again.
It was no a lot of fun over the past 6 weeks, but I'm glad I took some time off. Now the problem is getting back to where I was without re-injury!!!
