Wish I could edit posts (never lets me) .. one of my favorite Pratchett books that wasn't Discworld : Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch
Fforde's not one you can openly quote in conversation either, but that's because it's completely off the wall.
Terry Pratchett is good for off the wall zany as well. Of the Diskworld books he's written, the ones I've read are always.. well.. a bit loopy but worth the read.
Then there is always Douglas Adams if you want zany and science fiction. Your whole whale quote reminded me of the whale and potted plant scene... an excerpt from the book:
“Another thing that got forgotten was the fact that against all probability a sperm whale had suddenly been called into existence several miles above the surface of an alien planet.
And since this is not a naturally tenable position for a whale, this poor innocent creature had very little time to come to terms with its identity as a whale before it then had to come to terms with not being a whale any more.
This is a complete record of its thoughts from the moment it began its life till the moment it ended it.
Ah … ! What’s happening? it thought.
Er, excuse me, who am I?
Hello?
Why am I here? What’s my purpose in life?
What do I mean by who am I?
Calm down, get a grip now … oh! this is an interesting sensation, what is it? It’s a sort of … yawning, tingling sensation in my … my … well I suppose I’d better start finding names for things if I want to make any headway in what for the sake of what I shall call an argument I shall call the world, so let’s call it my stomach.
Good. Ooooh, it’s getting quite strong. And hey, what’s about this whistling roaring sound going past what I’m suddenly going to call my head? Perhaps I can call that … wind! Is that a good name? It’ll do … perhaps I can find a better name for it later when I’ve found out what it’s for. It must be something very important because there certainly seems to be a hell of a lot of it. Hey! What’s this thing? This … let’s call it a tail – yeah, tail. Hey! I can can really thrash it about pretty good can’t I? Wow! Wow! That feels great! Doesn’t seem to achieve very much but I’ll probably find out what it’s for later on. Now – have I built up any coherent picture of things yet?
No.
Never mind, hey, this is really exciting, so much to find out about, so much to look forward to, I’m quite dizzy with anticipation …
Or is it the wind?
There really is a lot of that now isn’t it?
And wow! Hey! What’s this thing suddenly coming towards me very fast? Very very fast. So big and flat and round, it needs a big wide sounding name like … ow … ound … round … ground! That’s it! That’s a good name – ground!
I wonder if it will be friends with me?
And the rest, after a sudden wet thud, was silence.
Curiously enough, the only thing that went through the mind of the bowl of petunias as it fell was Oh no, not again. Many people have speculated that if we knew exactly why the bowl of petunias had thought that we would know a lot more about the nature of the universe than we do now.”

One book series that I really loved and kept me turning pages was the Stieg Larsson Girl with Dragon Tattoo trilogy. Very suspenseful books.

One of my all time favorites. We lived in the UK just after this came out and as a teen I really loved this book. Lots of memories quoting lines with friends.
I can never edit posts either. Bug in the system, among others on this board. The mobile site is kind of borked too. Can never get past page one of any post.

From i love every book he has done some way more then others so its hard to tell you a start point. Christoper moore FAQ 1) What order should I read your books in?
Some of the books can be read out of order. Lamb, Coyote Blue, Fool, and Fluke can pretty-much be read on their own, although there are some characters that appear in other books. That said, here’s the order I wrote them in:
Practical Demonkeeping*
Coyote Blue
Bloodsucking Fiends †
The Island of the Sequined Love Nun
The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove *
Lamb
Fluke
The Stupidest Angel *
A Dirty Job
You Suck: A Love Story †
Fool
Bite Me: A Love Story †
Sacré Bleu
† the vampire series, better read in order
* The Pine Cove series, better read in order.
Speaking of series - I just remembered a Fantasy series I read by Kylie Chan that relies heavily on Asian Mythology and Lore. She has written several others since then but I haven't started in on them. Really pleasant action/mythology page turners
'Dark Heavens' Trilogy
1. White Tiger
2. Red Phoenix
3. Blue Dragon
Adding Moore to my "read" list... Thanks!!!
I have to warn you if Cuss words and sex bother you skip the Moore books >_< but if you don't care then read on let me know what you think of his works. All this book talk reminds me I need to go to the book store this week and look for some new books to read.
If it's any consolation, 50 Shades sits on my bookshelf. I don't think cuss words and sex are a problem :P
And I have to agree with Laron's "Girl with the Dragoon Tattoo" series as well. I read all three books before watching the foreign films. I watched the American one because it had Daniel Craig in it.. I kind of wish I had left it to the Swedish!
