But the frame rate vs the spin of the ball makes it look jerky. So until I can work that out it will be a while till I have a video of it.

I believe you said somewhere you were using POVray to generate the images.
You can use POV in animate mode to create a sequence of images with a small amount of motion between each image.
Then use an application like ffmpeg to combine those images into a video file.
I'll give it a look!
