Default How much tape is too much tape?

Been looking at and working with the tiered tape concept that was introduced by Joe Slowinski.

Does anyone have a rule of thumb (hah, no pun intended) as to how much tape is too much tape?

When it starts to affect your release for the worse, then it's too much.

Its a good rule of thumb, and you know its too much,,,,,, ,,, when the thumb does not enter the thumb hole, after repeated thumb thrusts!! LOL (

Keep in mind for each pice of tape you add to the front of the thumb lengthens your span slightly. I try and limit my tape to 3 or 4 pieces

You should only add 1 piece of friction (White) tape to the front of the hole, and any additional pieces of (Black) tape should be around the back of the hole as needed.

This avoids changing the span significantly.

Had a bronze USBC coach tell me that you should place at least 1 piece of tape at 1 o'clock and then 7 o'clock if you have a 'oval' thumb and a stock round drilled thumb slug. Unless you have a custom made insert, or if you have a completely round thumb, you probably need some tape......And yes, you have to much when you can't get your thumb out any more, may be 1 piece, may be 10....

I have started using tape this past summer and can definitely tell that it makes a difference. I had all of my balls thumb holes opened up a bit and only use 1 piece of white tape at about the 1'oclock position. Provides much better grip and feel like I have better control. I will have to look up the Slowinski article regarding the tiered tape method and give that a try at my next practice.

To avoid this problem with lengthening the span when you put in the tape you stagger the pieces from the bottom to the top. So your first piece will touch the bottom of the hole then the next one up will be over that piece but a little higher so the tip of that piece touches the ball. You do the same with each piece so your last piece will have it's tip touching the ball. In other words it will be like a ramp with the lowest part at the top of the hole. You never want to place the tape one on top of the other like a stack of boxes.

After I got my Fringe and Diva back, I can safely say it's not longer a problem. I intentionally wanted the hole a little tight to start with and with the mild bevel I have on both, it's a beautiful thing!
