Set 1: 193, 182, 375 total

Set 2: 188, 152, 340 total

As usual when subbing I have no idea what pattern we were on. Won the first game in each set and took the wood in the first. I'm not sure what was happening in the last game. I think I wasn't executing consistently and therefore couldn't make a good adjustment. I am not going to blame the Purple Hammers, Black Hammers and other urethane balls sharing the ball return rack with my Phase II and Mix.

Buddies Summer Challenge Week 13 8/25/25

Last week of the summer league, subbing for one of the juniors who had to leave for college before the end of the season. It was a double position round so we had to wait a while to get new lane assignments for the second set. The first set my opponent was supposed to be one of the kids I used to coach. He also had to return school early and did not get a sub so I had to bowl against the league blind score of 172. The other two bowlers who were supposed to be on the pair were also AWOL so I had the lanes to myself. It took me until the 8th frame to throw a strike in the first game, next game was clean with a turkey in the middle.

Second set I had a real person to bowl against. MY spare game took a two frame vacation in the middle of the first game but my opponent was stringing his strikes together and his 213 would still have beaten my score even if I had made all my spares. Neither of us looked sharp in the last game and I manage to ear a couple more points for the kid I subbed for.

A week off for Labor Day and then I will be back as a regular in the winter challenge league.

Buddies Winter Challenge Week 1 9/8/25

I'm back as a regular for the fall/winter season. We're doing the head to head position round each week with bonus points for scoring higher than other bowlers. Unfortunately my draw for the first night was a former Brunswick amateur staffer. Without a doubt I will be near the bottom of the standings next week.

Buddies Winter Challenge Week 2 9/15/25

So this week the matchups were based on the standings after week one so my opponent and I came in with almost identical averages. the first two games were close with me leading most of the game and having to mark for the win which I did. the last game I trailed almost the whole game, went into the tenth with a chance to win if I struck out. I got the first one, the sweep came down and never went back up. My ball didn't come back either, so I called the desk. Everyone else finished on our pair, all the other pairs finished up, the league manager came over and started to collect our recap sheets. I said "Chris, I still have to finish the 10th and am waiting for the get my ball back and give me pins to shoot at. A few minutes later I was told to finish on the other lane. I hit the pocket and left a 7 pin and then missed the spare to lose by a pin.

If they wouldn't have went to pinsetters...you coulda just had the kid reset the pins by hand and earn his 50 cents per night. Stupid progress!!

I’ve talked with people who worked as pin boys, one who did it during the great depression, the other did it just as automatic pinsetters were starting to be installed. According to Nick who set pins in the 1930s kids would go to the alley and work in exchange for being allowed to bowl a few games. John worked at a center that offered regular 10 pin bowling as well as both duck pins and candle pins. Some of the bowlers would deliberately try hit the pins hard enough to send them up onto some pipes that ran over the pits. The pins might then roll along the pipes until they fel through several lanes away, sometimes on the head of an unsuspecting pin boy. Other bowlers were nicer and some tipped quite well if the pin boy was fast and efficient.

I doubt many kids would be willing to work that hard for minimum wage.
