RENO, Nev. - Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, N.Y., may not have earned an exemption for this season's PBA Women's Series, presented by the United States Bowling Congress, but she's taking advantage of every opportunity she's given to compete.

As the second alternate, Johnson has made it into three out of five Women's Series events before this week, finishing third, fourth and fifth. This week, at the one event she did qualify outright for, she's back at it, leading after qualifying at the Don and Paula Carter Mixed Doubles Championship.

Johnson leads the largest field to ever compete in a Women's Series event, totaling 3,188 over 14 games (227.71 average) to top a group of 32 women at the National Bowling Stadium. Carolyn Dorin-Ballard of Keller, Texas, was a distant second at 3,063.

In the five Women's Series events leading up to this week, only 16 players competed in each event. However, the Mixed Doubles Championship added the next 16 players in the standings from the Women's Tour Trials, held in August, to make up a field of 32 players.

The women competed alongside the men Monday during qualifying and will pair up with the men in Tuesday's match play round. The 16 doubles teams, determined by final position in qualifying, will carry over 50 percent of their qualifying pins and compete in 16 games of match play.

Johnson will team up with men's top qualifier Norm Duke of Clermont, Fla., who totaled 3,313 in qualifying (236.64 average). Dorin-Ballard pairs up with Sean Rash of Wichita, Kan., who was second with 3,256.

The final round of the Don and Paula Carter Mixed Doubles Championship will be taped for television on Sunday at the National Bowling Stadium. The final round is scheduled to air on ESPN on Feb. 1 at 2 p.m. Eastern.
