Duke Sets the Pace after 14 Games of Qualifying

RENO, NEV. (January 8, 2009) — PBA Hall of Famer-Elect Norm Duke of Clermont, Fla. and Walter Ray Williams Jr. of Ocala, Fla. sit 1-2 in the standings after the qualifying rounds of the 2009 National Bowling Stadium Championship.

“In any sport, momentum is huge”, said Duke. “I’ve bowled a lot of games this week, more games are good for me right now to get in the groove and build some confidence.”

Defending champion Tommy Jones of Simpsonville, S.C. is currently in 12th place. Jones won the 2008 Constructionjobs.com Championship at the National Bowling Stadium on Jan. 6, 2008 defeating Patrick Allen 254-214 to win his 11th career title on the Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour.

The National Bowling Stadium Championship features a 64-player field bowling 14 games of qualifying with seven games each on the PBA Experience Cheetah and Shark patterns. The top 32 players with the highest pinfall advance to match play competition.

Round One of match play features nine head-to-head one-game matches with the top 16 players advancing. Round Two of match play features an additional nine head-to-head one-game matches with the top five players advancing to the ESPN-televised stepladder finals on Sunday Jan. 11. Match play will feature multiple patterns with the Shark pattern on the left lane and the Cheetah pattern on the right lane.

This is the first time that multiple oil patterns will be used during a Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour tournament and on the telecast, requiring bowlers to face the challenge of negotiating each oil pattern by determining equipment choices and lane play strategy on every alternating shot.

Bowling fans will be treated to a pair of nationally-televised Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour events on Sunday at the National Bowling Stadium. Tickets are free and doors are open to the public at 8 a.m. PT.

The bowling doubleheader starts with ESPN’s live final round coverage of The National Bowling Stadium Championship at 10 a.m. PT.

Norm Duke will be inducted into the Professional Bowlers Hall of Fame during ceremonies to be held at the Red Rock Casino on Saturday Jan. 24 in Las Vegas, Nev.
