    Default What Ball to Get

I went to get my Hellraiser out of the closet Wednesday and it had a crack all the way around it....from grip to grip....had maybe 30 games on it. If I can find my receipt I'll be happy...it's only a year old.

I had it drilled pin down and didn't like the early roll.

I'm wanting a ball that will go long with a big flip at the end...I have a Marauder and a Berserk but can't really open the lane up very much unless it is really dry. I was thinking a more aggressive ball drilled with the pin above my fingers.

To that end I did a search for a ball with high hook potential and length. I got some interesting results to say the least. One was the Brunswick Mastermind Genius which I thought was cool because it has a brain on it. Lol....

I'm going to inquire at my local pro shop on Monday and see what they say....until then suggestions are welcome....

Pro shop is a great place to start, I did just get the Mastermind Genius, I love throwing Brunswick balls, I also had a Hellraiser Split around from thumb to thumb.

Back to the Genius, for me its the most hooking (move across the most boards) ball in my arsenal, but I am a 15mph, low revs like around 300 or lower, I had to have it sanded with 1500 to remove the factory polish to get the backend movement I wanted and it work great tonight on a THS, my pin is above ring finger with cg out to the right with counterbalance hole on my PAP, and I have my Purple Taboo (bought at same time) drilled identically to the Genius, and they perform totally different.

I also see a lot of the Storms IQ Fusions (got this one for my wife, we will see how it move for her tomorrow), both the Fusion and Genius are hybrid balls (pearl mixture), now a full pearl should give you the most length before flip and more drive and power into the pocket but not move as many boards, and for this I use my Purple Taboo from Hammer. The Purple Taboo (for me) hits harder cause is breaks later and has more drive into the pocket, the Genius moves more board and has a softer hit but cover more of the lane.

But if you ask any else, they will tell you a completely different story. I go to http://www.bowlingball.com watch the videos of the different balls but pick one of the bowlers that looks most like you (I like watch Curley, he's closest to my game) and I compare how the different balls work, that what made me pick Genius (besides being a Brunswick ball).

If your Pro Shop can watch you throw a few balls and see what your play style is, then I listen to them. show them your tracking on your current balls also.

    Hope that helps: Jerry

I second working with a pro shop.

There are a lot of great skid/flip balls out there, but a pro can help you find the right one for your style.

C'mon dude...if it's newer it has to better....it will have a molten core of liquid hot magma!!! lol I have no problem buying older gear if they have something on sale. That being said I'm sure they will steer me to something new...that doesn't bother me so much. I like supporting the local shop and unless I can get a screaming deal on something older I like looking at the newer stuff.

I can usually save a bit online but then the drilling prices go up (alot). If I buy through them the drilling is free, the grips can maybe be switched from the hellraiser and they will resurface and rejuvenate my Marauder for free. Im actually going to take the cracked hellraiser with me since it was drilled by them. They might help me out since apparently all my evidence for when I bought it has disappeared.

Either way I'm going to get a lane in front of the sho[p...warm up a bit...have them watch me throw and then make their suggestions. I have a good benchmark ball (Marauder) and a good medium oil ball (Berserk...similar to the Marauder..same reactiobn but a little stronger with a bit more mid lane read)...I'd like to have a heavier oil ball with some length...my Hellraiser would have fit the bill but I wanted to try it pin down which evidently is not my style....and now its broke.

I'm looking forward to something new now...
