Some of the common surfaces in order of decreasing friction are:

    Guardian (most friction)
    wood (different coatings change friction)
    Brunswick Lane Shield
    AMF HPL and SPL
Original Brunswick AnviLane (if it has been polished)
    new Brunswick Pro AnviLane (textured)
early Brunswick Pro AnviLane (least friction)

The hardness of the sub strait, the foot print that the ball produces on the surface, and the texture are the determining factors in determining the friction between the ball and the lane.

USBC specs a minimum of 35 Sward hardness for synthetic panels. Though the exact hardness is proprietary info to the manufacturer.

I rather enjoy bowling Brunswick Zone lanes. There are several in our area. The amount of dots on the approach is not material to me. The difference of 2 dots is a trivial thing. I just count out 5 boards if I need them. As I understand it, the difference between a good bowler and a great bowler is being able to make adjustments - not just get high scores. (High scores are the result of sucessful adjusment)

The brunswick zone lanes in my area are very well managed. Lanes are oiled regularly and amenites are always in order. I also bowl at National Lanes, which are not bad, but they tend to cater to kids on the weekends. If you arrive early on a Saturday or Sunday, you have oil on the lanes. As the day goes on, plastic balls and lack of lane maintenance makes for tough control. That's where I work on adjustments. i forget about scores and work on sucessful adjustments.
I live by three simples rules:

    1. Don't ever ask about my business
    2. Never discuss business at the table
    3. Don't ever side with anyone against the family

we dont have any brunswick centers around here for me to compare amf to I am pretty sure there is no possible way a brunswick alley could be half as bad as a amf house. AMF is starting to feel like a vulgar word in my mouth

To bad you don't live in Mi. At Detroit bowling and skills they have 4 Brunswick lanes and 4 Amf lanes. You can have them lay down the shot you want on both and see for your self side by side. It really is a cool place. I think every town should have one.

There is one house in town that does have brunswick pro anvil lanes and when it is fresh it is a pretty easy shot but it dries out really fast especially if you have a few crankers on the pair
I dont really care that much what the shot is like I should be able to find a line to be able to play somewhere out there I care more about the service and prices and quality of food and drinks and how much they take care of the equipment and center

I thought so. We played there once and I killed it. A shot real good set.
