That Taboo Spare ball was designed as a hooking ball for the PBA Plastic ball tourney. Thats not what you need.
With a pancake weight block, just drill it directly over the label. i.e. CG in middle of the grip.
I rotated mine to place the engravings out of the track area.
Conventional grip would feel different, and could negatively effect your shot.
Getting the thumb out "quick" keeps the ball from hanging up on the thumb which can hinder accuracy.
But you're not trying to throw high RPMS at spares.
Personally my first ball is about 500 RPM, while my spare shots are closer to 100 rpm.
I haven't thrown a gutterball in a while. Wonder how that came about ;p
My bowling balls include:
Brunswick Brute Strength, Brunswick Mastermind Genius, DV8 Endless Nightmare, DV8 Diva, DV8 Diva Pearl, DV8 Marauder Mutiny, & Brunswick White Viz-A-Ball spare ball
iceman what i did to my spare ball was when i drilled it the pin is on the other side of the ball witch helps me move the ball alittle just in chase its about to go in the gutter and know after improving my spare shooting i hit all my 10pins now i jsut still need to work on my 6 and 9 single pin spares i normaly just wif them.
but this year i went to one bowling alley that was wood lanes but no different i dont put much rev on ym spare ball and when i would stand where i normaly do and aim at my target i noticed i was missing the 10pin and all pin to the left witch is not common for me to do.
so after the same was over i walked up and counted the boards and there was 40 boards but 2 boards on the left side of the lane where smaller then the other check for that that could be the cause of it.

Iceman, I use a plastic T-Zone drilled straight up or what some like to
call drilling it with a label drill with the same span and grips as my strike
balls.
The way I shoot that nasty 10 pin is I bring my index finger in next to my
middle finger and spread my little finger out as wide as I can get it and I
break my wrist back and put no side roll/turn on the ball I just put all end
over end forward roll on it and it goes straight no matter what the lane are
like.
I'd have to say since I've been shooting it that way my percentage of making
it has gone from somewhere around 70% to around 98% then the times I do
miss it it is usually to the right side where it slides off in front of it.

If I understand the question correctly (and I may not be!), I think of a "spare ball" as a plastic ball -- not a low-flare reactive ball. A low-flare reactive ball is a low-flare reactive ball. Bearing that in mind (because I had the same question in my own head in looking for a plastic ball for spares), are all plastic balls created equal? Is it simply a matter of aesthetics and brand-loyalty? Or are there real differences?

don't ask me I just spray can graffiti all over the lanes. throw what makes you feel good. I do.
I think pretty much every bowling ball is exactly the same...so plastic balls should be no different.
