Default ARE ALL SPARE BAlls CREATED EQUAL?

The only part of my game that seems to be killing me is 10 pin leaves at this new alley! I think I know what I should do to pick it up, but my question is this:

    1. Any difference in picking a good 10 pin ball

    2. Do some bowlers drill it specific to picking up a 10 pin? Any grip better then another???

    3. If I could just hit 80 percent of them, all the time, my average would increase dramatically! Most spares like the 7 pin, (me being right handed are automatic, rarely miss one.

    4. Do any pros drill a spare for the 10 pin? ( right handers)

    5. What about a low level ball that can bite the edge if you shoot short of the 10 pin? (like a low level ball, but not plastic, drilled weak?)

I know one guy that throws a huge backup ball, (right handed) to pick it up, and he gets it every time!! throws it like I do to pick up the 7 pin, but on the other side of the lane. Its a big sweeping hook back to the 10 pin!

If I could master the 10 pin,,,, I would have that 200, 210 average, I am convinced!!!

some times I am on in regards to the 10 pin, but this last month, its been a huge problem!

I do the typical stand far left side of lane and throw center arrow... sometimes I hook just to the left, sometimes just in front of the fricken pin!

It should be easy, I am sure its something I am leaving out, or not doing in my delivery!

With this huge lack of ability to pick this pin up, my averages this season are higher then last year, but range from 190 to 198 at seasons end.

10 pin has been my average killer!!! When I am on, I have had several strong 700s.... 750 725, 780 my best.

I want to be able to HIT that puppy just as easy as the 7 pin!!

Any thoughts in regards to type of ball, certain brand,, drilling a ball differently, release style ????

ICEMAN, pick yourself a Polyester ball and drill it with just your regular favorite fit. No special drilling needed.

My advice, is to get lots of practice and focus on the 10 pin pickup. When you practice it, shoot at only the 10 pin, nothing else. I did this last summer as I was having the same type of issues picking that pesky pin up. Found my go to spot to angle it from the left side and have been hitting it 88% this past season. If you want to see how I get it, got to my Hyper Cell video as there are several 10 pin pickups on that video.

    2. Do some bowlers drill it specific to picking up a 10 pin? Any grip better then another??? Go with the tri-grip!

    4. Do any pros drill a spare for the 10 pin? ( right handers) Yes, nearly every one does!

    5. What about a low level ball that can bite the edge if you shoot short of the 10 pin? (like a low level ball, but not plastic, drilled weak?) Yes, may I suggest the more modern Blue Hammer! Go with a weaker layout and watch that average climb!

Any of the plastic balls would be fine.

    T-Zone, White Dot, Maxim.

All those should be low price.

I have the exact same Tri-Grip in the plastic (mine is a White Dot) with one minor exception.

I have a little bit of forward pitch in the thumb.

The pitch allows me to throw the ball a little harder on those times I have a split, and hope to bounce a pin around.

You want to be able to get out of the thumb hole clean, but you don't need to get out so quick to throw a lot of revs.

When shooting at the 10 pin, I choose the throw over the 3rd arrow, and have the ball still going to the right as it hits the 10 pin.

If you play the 2nd arrow, the ball can pick up a roll, and hook back left a little.

That is bad news if you leave a 6-10 because the 6-10 is just begging to have the 6 be chopped.

Instead of hooking the ball at a 7 pin you should throw the spare ball just the same as at the 10 pin.

Figure out were best to stand for the 7, and the 10 during a practice session.

Once you have those locations, they will work wherever you bowl at, regardless of how the lanes are oiled.

I use the Storm Polar Ice as my spare ball. I had it drilled to not hook. On house patterns it will hold if you get it to close to the gutter. On sport shots I found out the hard way right into the gutter.

Also on dry conditions this ball works great as a strike ball if you really need it.

I second that with circlecity. I've even had to use my spare ball the last couple of practices due to the lanes being a little dryer. That's where I use my white ball. Brunswick white viz-a-ball that is. ;p

Default Iceman will be a much better person if......

I am thinking very seriously about getting this puppy!!! Iceman is desperate.... I need to get this ONE PART of my game under better control. I know it can be done, I have seen some,,, (NOT MANY) pick it up almost every time it comes up.

I beginning to wonder if its a MIND GAME.... Maybe I am making it more difficult then it really is, then my body follows what my mind is thinking,,,

I am going to for the FIRST TIME bowl a bunch of games throwing at the ,,,, (10) pin! Maybe a good way to practice would be

Go for the 10 pin,,,, then hopefully shoot the remaining 9 pins with a strike ball, since the 7 pin is no problem at all!

I SWEAR TO THE GODS that if I could JUST,,,, JUST get better in this part of my game, I will be a BETTER Super Hero! I will assist, any and all older ladies, and men cross busy streets, pat every child on the head, and give a dog biscuit to all dogs wondering into my yard to take a dump!

I will, in short, be a MUCH BETTER PERSON, and HERO!!

I appreciate all your suggestions!!!! I will have this ball drilled with the trigrip,,,, getting the thumb out quick I would assume is a good thing, that happens with that grip.
Does anyone ever use a conventional grip for just the 10 pin,,, and would it make that pin any easier to pick up,,, ( just a thought).

What drilling lay out MIKE WHITE would you use pin up, down,,, on this ball for a dedicated 10 pin destroyer!!!

Exactly what I do. 3rd arrow, not only is house conditions but also on sport shots. Have had some practice on the usbc open patterns the last couple weeks and found this to work there as well.

Iceman, my advice is to not change your grip, use same grip you use on your strike ball. That Taboo will still hook if yr not careful.

Get a plastic ball as mentioned by Mike White, Maxim, Tzone, white dot. Etc. don't need to spend $100 + drill. $50 and drill and done.
