Default Cupped to uncupped vs cocked to uncocked release

I was watching the analysis of the modern 10 pin bowling swing and felt kind of stupid. I've never realized the difference between these two methods or that they really are two different things or at least that's the way it seems to me. So if you are using the point the ring finger method discussed on here which method are you using? If you are cupping the ball is it necessary or even wise to stay to the inside of the ball? It seems to me that leads more to the cocked method and not cupped. Maybe I'm just confused I have always cupped the ball but since I've been back the pro shop owner I've been working with has had me working on staying inside of the ball so at the moment I'm doing both is that incorrect?

Sorry I know this is a difficult topic.

In baseball I know what cupped to uncapped meant, but in bowing I thought that they were the same thing! Mike White knows everything, though he will probably disagree with that statement! LOL

Best advise I can give you is DO what works for you! I have seen MANY bowlers that have never had a lesion in their life's with some of the strangest deliveries You have ever seen, that have REAL HIGH averages. Golf the same way.... !

I just got started not long ago, and this last year had some great scores and series,,, a couple 300 within 6 months of one another, with my best series being a 780. All without lesions. (that was for you Mike, and granny LOL) barf!!!!! LOL

Don't get me wrong,,, I am going to jump on my bike, hook up my trailer and let Rob, in Vegas Ruin me with a lesion!

I think I will bowl Mike White, Rob, and Aslan BEFORE THE lesion!!! Who knows what damage it might do! LOL

If something is working, DON"T FIX IT!! Just enjoy it!!

Iceman, you keep talking about how many people in your area have non-traditional approaches/releases, and despite never having received a lesson in their life, have very high averages.

How many of those people have been bowling for less than 20-30 years (other than you, a freak of nature)? The people around here that have high averages and unorthodox approaches have been bowling for at least 15 years, and I've passed most of them up after working with a coach for a year.

As for the topic, I try to do both, but I think I'm more cocked than cupped.....I have to make a new video of my approach to see for sure. Sometimes it feels like you are doing something, and then when you watch the video you see you aren't doing it as much as you thought .

Amyers: The difference between cupped and cocked releases is a matter of the release timing, but staying on the inside of the ball in important to each. The timing difference is often referred to as lift and turn vs. turn and lift. To see what I'm talking about, take a look at slow motion video of the releases of Chris Barnes and Sean Rash. Barnes, an example of a lift and turn release, lets the weight of the bowling ball begin the release, and turns through the ball after the thumb has exited. Rash, an example of turn and lift, begins the release by turning, and lifts through the release. Both styles are very effective and both can be traced back to roots in the '80's and 90's, the dawn of the modern power era in bowling. Mark Roth was the "father" of the turn and lift style, while Marshall Hollman originated the lift and turn style.

My question at the moment for this is at the end is it as simple as release the cup or cock by relaxing the wrist or is there more to it.

There's more to it which I'm sure your coach can help you with. In the meantime, see if you can find a video of Team USA member David Haynes. David is unique in that he actually starts with his wrist broken, and just loads just before the point of release. It's a very simple release that will probably help you to understand what's going on.

we have a guy we call "Hoppy" he's right handed with a spinner release (over the top) and releases off his right foot. avg on a house shot 213 lol i have never seen a release quite a goofey as that but it works for him, here in cornfieldhell, IL the bowling alley is one of the oldest building in town that still has wood lanes and up until the 80s had alley rats employed to reset pins. i learned how to bowl there never once got training from anyone except my grandfather, i took what he taught me and tweeked a few things now i have a consistent stroker release that works very well with me. i did go to a training once in chicago where Belmo held a seminar on two handed bowling, i cannot throw two handed but it was fun and it has been the only training i have ever had, won the sweeper and took home $100 lol
