That's good advice. I was born in Miami and have visited often throughout the years, grew up in DC, lived in NYC, and now live in downtown San Diego (at least for the moment). In all my experiences, every single city has shady areas where its best not to venture into if you're not familiar, and even if you are familiar its often best to avoid those spots.

Most smaller cities have those kinds of places, too. It ain't just the metropolitan behemoths.

CLeveland is like Detroit. If you're around the sports stadiums and theatre district…it seems like a safe, progressive, thriving city. The problem is, when there's no game going on or you stray literally ONE block from that area…it gets very scary VERY fast.

And yes, LA is kinda a "hole", but I don't really live near LA nor walk around LA (there's no reason to). I live closer to Anaheim, which for the most part is nicer.

And yes, Mike W…I realize a person got shot outside Del Rosa. A girl also got chopped up in Yorba Linda as part of some prostitution ring…yet I' walk around Yorba Linda at 3:30AM on any night and not think anything of it. Crime happens…everywhere. It's a reality. Normally I don't let it change the way I'm going to live my life. BUT…yes, when you find yourself in an area that looks like Lebanon…and it's deserted like a scene from a zombie apocalypse movie…hopefully we all have enough of a "spider sense" to go, "Ummm…this may not be where I want to walk around."

Should I have turned back? Probably. I guess I thought it would get better. If it were Detroit, which I know better…I'd have known it wasn't going to get any better. But being new to Cleveland…sometimes we kinda keep walking…trying to be optimistic.

I got lost in Amsterdamn once. I was trying to get to a casino on the edge of the city but misinterpreted the map and ended up going in the wrong direction. Fortunately, it's a fairly nice city to get lost in.

I got lost on the River Walk in San Antonio when I was fourteen. But I had fun doing it.
