Default approach distance ( what i noticed when I shorten mine)

since I started bowling, I used the whole distance of the approach. tonight I picked moisture on my slide shoe. needless to say, the sudden stop and no slide throw off my timing and came close once to a face plant. I moved up like 4ft on the approach. just to reduce the momentum of my slide. felt like my timing was much better and I had better balance at the release plus I was still roll at the same speeds as I normally do. also noticed that I automatically took shorter steps. I have no idea if I crossed the foul line or not, the foul sensors where off because they where running just straight open bowling and also had the winter monday night league meeting going on.

I went back to my normal approach once started getting my slide back, I notice my timing was way off and did not feel right. plus I had speeds 2mph faster then my avg speed and all over the place.

just a few observations of what I noticed. wish I made a video lol.

One of the most common causes of late timing is footwork that is too fast and gets the bowler to the line in front of the ball. Specifically, the first couple of steps, when they are too long and too fast can really muddy the waters. A shorter, slower approach, where the steps become increasingly longer and maintain a good rhythm can do wonders to correct bad timing.

I was taught that to measure your approach, start at the foul line and do your normal approach the opposite direction. Wherever you end up should be where you want to start. You'd be surprised how little of the approach you actually need to make a good shot.

main reason I started so far back was I bad about crossing the foul line. slowed down alot on the approach. always learning and figuring out things.

That's the way my approach is: slow and short, moving to a bit faster and longer. Being a musician (spent 10 years in marching band), my approach does have a rhythm to it.
