Question Question for those with DYI deoilers/dehydrators

Do they produce a lot of odor or otherwise unpleasant fumes?

I live in an apartment with no balcony, and since there are no electrical outlets at the beach when I'm out surfing really the only place I can set this up is in my apartment, but of course I don't want to poison my cat (or myself) with some kind of toxic bowling oil/ball resin vapors (probably exaggerating a bit about the toxicity).

I just don't want to spend the money, build the thing, and then have to just trash it.

I've never noticed any odors, even with the scented balls with mine or even from the revivor ovens.

Not really. The only time I noticed an bad odor was when the tray and ball came into direct contact with the heating element and the plastic/resin melted. That produced a burnt plastic fume.

But during normal usage, nothing so far.

It's not really bad, or lingering, and maybe I'm just sensitive, but I can definitely smell the oil.

I did, and have the food dehydrator converted system myself! It works great, I ordered the extra rings ect ect. YES IT DOES GIVE OFF A LANE oil smell. It's very strong in my opinion, and I have a rather average size nose!

Mine is in my garage,,, I have to open the doors in order to avoid inhaling the pungent oil fumes! I think good ventilation should be in place when using it with a bowling ball.

If you have an oven vent, that sends fumes out side the house, (not just recirculate it back), I would use it under the vent!

It's not your imagination,, they do put out fumes!

Good info everyone, overall I just have a problem justifying spending $20 for the pro shop to deoil every time when I can build my own for $80....I do have windows and a fan, I could probably rig something up and try to blow the fumes out the window while the thing is in use.

it's really not that bad zdawg, and de-oiling every few weeks at home keeps your ball gripping the lanes and carrying better.

Absolutely and totally worth it. I do it for all my teammates every couple months as well.

Default Two important items every serious bowler should have!

I have to to honest,,, I did the resurface with my spinner, then De-oiled my original Deadly-Aim,,, Wow,,, its like a car with a new set of snow tires!

Two things I would not be without, spinner, and my home made dehydrator converted to ball de-oiler!! Bring then old puppies back to life!!

It's fun to play with different surfaces, with different balls! Finding that magic combination is what can give you that 300, 800!

    Totally agree.

I honestly don't understand people that bowl as a hobby fervently enough to post about about it online (like us..) that don't have these two items.
