Default Things I learned about my ball at our new House pro shop..........

Today I went to our pro shop at the new house we bowl in to find out things about my thumbhole in my Hammer Anger ball. The thumbhole was too big and tape wasn't helping enough. The ball seemed to be falling off my hand too easily through the release zone. I asked him if he could check the left/right pitch and the forward/reverse of the thumbhole. The left/right pitch was wrong for me and the forward/reverse pitch was 1/8 reverse. He said that is why the ball was dropping off too easily for me. I forget what he changed the left/right pitch to but the forward/reverse pitch he changed to 1/8 forward.

With the pitch changes I had the old thumb slug drilled out and a new slug put in and drilled so I have a snug fit and don't have to put in 5 or 6 pieces of tape. I also am having the ball de-oiled and resurfaced to 4000 Abralon and polished. I told the pro shop guy that the new thumb pitches and new surfacing of my ball might throw off my game. When I pick up my ball Thursday I will have to bowl a couple games to see what this new thumbhole size will be like. Have to make sure that my thumb won't be hanging up when it warms up. Also have to see what the ball will do through the release zone when it comes off my hand.

Hopefully I will have better control of the ball with the pitch changes. I never really knew about the different pitches in the finger holes until I came to this site. I am glad that I asked these questions at the pro shop today.

He changed the pitch from 1/8 reverse to 1/8 forward? That is one hell of a change and i'm sure makes a big difference. Last time i changed my thumb pitch i only changed from 3/16 reverse to 1/8 reverse. Hope it works out for your game.

The pro shop guy said that with a reverse thumbhole pitch you have a tendency to grip tighter with the thumb on the forward swing to keep it from coming off too early. With a forward pitch you have a better chance to have more of a relaxed grip with the thumb in the forward swing. I will see how it works when I pick up the ball and bowl some games.

I told him that I used to bowl at the AMF in Bolingbrook and it seemed to be harder to get good games there then in the Brunswick house we bowl in now where his pro shop is. He said our AMF house had older synthetic lanes. The Brunswick house is much newer then the AMF we bowled at. I am liking the scores I bowl now at the Brunswick.

With that kind of pitch change did he change your span as well? Be careful on the first few throws, that will make a massive difference.

The span was okay and didn't have to be changed. Yeah, it will be interesting to see what the difference in feel will be like. I will be taking it easy in the first practice game until I am confident with the feel.

thumb pitch does make a HUGE difference!!! My friend Gene has about the same span as ICE! I asked if I could throw his ball just to see how it would react! Felt great, but my right arm and ball just about went through the roof,,, way to much forward pitch for me!! Finding that perfect pitch is a huge part of having a great look on your ball going down the lane!

Nice to see even with that huge change he did not have the change the span. Let us know what differences you see when you throw is next I bet they will be huge!

Where did you take it to get the change?

If you're anywhere near western IL - I have a pro-shop recommendation that is TOP notch.

It was the pro shop in the Brunswick bowling alley in Romeoville on Weber road and I-55 expressway where we bowl league night.
