My center only has 16 lanes, and they are the original wood lanes that were installed in 1962

A lot of those small houses aren't around anymore. In the mid to late 80's i bowled leagues in a 12 lane dungeon that was brutal.

I think your going to find this problem with most entertainment choices. Every just popped in to play golf and there was a tourney or tee times all booked? A restaurant all filled etc... I would suggest asking the front desk the best time for open bowling and make a note.

I can't imagine a center with less than 30 lanes.

We used to have 24 lanes up until 1997 or 98 then they shut down
the 16 lanes upstairs leaving us with only 8 lanes downstairs in the
basement. Then in 1999 when I took off from bowling with a back
injury and I was on a 12 year break from my bowling they installed
6 more lanes and added synthetics making us have a big grand total
of 14 lanes now.

The alleys I have around me vary from 12 lanes to 52. My leagues are at the 52 lane house... for it's size, its run well (former AMF, now independent)

Where I bowl Mondays has 16 and where I bowl Friday's has 40
