Thumbs up Motiv ball finishing guide has me confused

I have Motiv Cruel Intent. Have had it for a couple of years now. And it was due for a make-over. I never touched the surface prior to this. OOB worked fantastically well for me. So without thinking too much about it, I pulled up Motiv's website and refinished it per their guide. Website says "5000 grit laser scan polished". So I did it without much thought. Tried using it the other night, and it was not the same ball, not even close.

I remember when I was doing it that I was concerned about the polish. I know this ball was not polished from the factory. So I'm thinking more about it, and checked the website again. Standard page info for the ball says 5000 laser scan polish. Motiv Video for the ball shows 4000 Sanded.

I sent an email to Motiv and got a response back saying that they changed the way they word their finish on the balls and insist that the 5000 laser scan polish is correct.

When I questioned it more, they simply said to leave the polish off if I want to. To me, the website is misleading and will lead to quite a few folks being frustrated and confused like I was.

Is this an industry shift with use of laser surface scanners and differing surface labels? Am I making a mountain out of a mole hill?

I just don't understand how they can sell a ball with 4000 Sanded, OOB, and instruct to use 4000 with polish for resurfacing. It's not even close to getting the same reaction.

Any Motiv Reps here that can help? Or should I just start changing the finish myself on all new balls right out of the box and make record of it? I know that's what alot of folks do, but like I said, this ball worked really well OOB for me so I hated to start experimenting with it.

    Thanks.

For the Motiv 5000 LSP should be 500 for 15 sec/ 1000 for 15 sec/ 2000 for 15 sec/ then polish for 30 seconds. Motiv scanned results are trying to show the finished grit after multiple levels of sanding and polishing for what the ball actually has as its surface. If you use 500 and then 2000 what it is the actual surface on the ball? You don't really know but somewhere in between Motiv's new system is trying to show you what's in between.

Thee Motiv Cruel Intent back when it came out, had a 4000 grit surface. Their website even listed it as 4000 Grit Sanded.
    You can see it here:
    https://web.archive.org/web/20131204...el-intent.html

At that time they didn't really define how to get their OOB surfaces and is before they started doing the LSS & LSP surfaces

Why they have the Cruel Intent listed now as "5000 Grit Laser Scan Polished (LSP)" I don't know.

I would try either of these Motiv or Storm steps which I think would be closer to the Org.

    Motiv "4000 Grit LSS" Steps:
    500/1000/2000/4000

    or the Storm steps:
    4000-grit Factory Finish
    1. 500-grit Abralon® – Sand firmly for 30 seconds on all four sides.
    2. 2000-grit Abralon – Sand lightly for 10 seconds on all four sides.
    3. 4000-grit Abralon – Sand lightly for 5 seconds on all four sides.
