Default Health issues put my bowling on hold.......

I was supposed to get a left hip replacement June 16th. When I went to my doctor for my pre-surgery exam I told him that I had a pain that was just below my right rib gage that kept bothering me for about 5 months. He had me take an ultrasound test to see what was going on. It turns out that I had a blockage in my right ureter tube where it connects to my bladder. He gave me a name of an urologist and said make an appointment ASAP. The urologist found a small tumor in my bladder. He said I would have to go under the knife so he could cut it out and see what was blocking my ureter. He took out the tumor and took a biopsy of the blockage in the ureter. They both turned out to be type one cancer.

When they did the CT scan on my kidneys they just happened to see something on my lower left lung. How lucky can I get. I had to have a CT scan of my lungs to check them out. It turns out that it was a nodule that more then likely is scar tissue. Well at least that took some worry off of me. I go under the knife again Monday to see if the cancer in the bladder is doing anything or not. They put a stint in my right ureter so the kidney can function normally. When I will be able to get my left hip replaced is unknown at this time. I have to get this other stuff cleared up first. I was just glad that I told my doctor that the pain below my right rib cage was still bothering me. It is cancer but it was found in the early stage.

All of this puts a big damper on my upcoming bowling season. I know the hip thing will take an unknown amount of time to heal before I can bowl again. September will be here before I know it. The question is when will I be ready to swing a bowling ball again? Being left handed my slide foot is my right and the balance leg is my left. Only time will tell when I will be bowling again.

First, I wish you all the best with your medical problems. My uncle who is 72 had a hip replacement last year almost exactly a year ago and is back to playing golf perfectly fine. I'm guessing about 2-3 months before you could try bowling, but it could take up to 6. It depends on your condition now and how fast you can heal. The advantage of bowling for you is that you aren't twisting your hip much at all unlike golf. If you can walk quickly, you can probably get your doctor to clear you to bowl fairly soon. The number one thing to do is to do your therapy as much as possible no matter how much it doesn't feel good. You will feel much better the next year and for the rest of your life if you do your therapy regularly as you are told to do it.

Thank you very much. At least cancer didn't hit me until I was 68. I started smoking when I was 18 but quit when I was 30. I was a one pack a day smoker. I was glad to see that my lungs looked okay in the CT scan. I hope it won't be a big deal to clear up my type 1 cancer in my bladder and ureter tube. I will miss not being able to start bowling in September.

Good Luck to you, had kidney cancer and kidney removed a few years ago, missed 2 months of bowling....good thing they caught yours early. Mine was an aggressive type and stage 3 but the Dr got it all and it hasn't returned. The people at the University of Wisconsin Madison are some of the best in the nation.
