    Default Index Finger Issues

I've had a bit of a rough go of it lately on the lanes. Summer didn't go as expected, other than greatly increasing my spare percentage.

The last 2-3 weeks, I've developed a very sore index finger (lefty here) as the night wears on. I'm not entirely sure what's causing it, but I've tried to use different pinkie/index spacing to see if I'm doing something wrong there......to no avail.

Thus, it seems like I've developed a release issue. Anyone else have the same problem, or something similar?

What type of pain is it? Do you feel the finger is being bent back on your release?

Would likely be worth a visit to pro shop to get fit checked out and see if they can identify any causes for it.

It's at the tip of my finger, where a callous always develops.

It's not excruciating on Wednesday night, by any means. But, when I'm done, the fingertip hurts. Then, when I bowl on Thursday.....by about the end of the first game, it starts to affect my delivery. By the end of Thursday's bowling, it's tough to throw.

I would see a pro shop and get fit checked. Seems you are using your index finger a lot, likely to help the ball get into rotation and hook.

As a short term solution I would suggest putting a piece of hada tape on it. Over the longer term I agree with Vdub have your proshop check you fit maybe have a coach watch you throw some. I don't understand why you would be generating enough friction off the index finger to cause calluses or discomfort.

    From the fitting tips:

    • Finger used to support wrist
    • OK unless painful

vdubtx's idea that you are using your index finger a lot, sounds close. Your probably trying to put rev's on the ball, using the index finger and placing too much pressure on it.

Some bowlers will place a insert on their index finger to help get some rev's and protect it, They actually make a thing called a Turbo "Rev" just for that.

Early on when I came back to bowling, I also had an index problem. Not only did I get a proper fit, but I also started to use the index finger as a pointer to my target.
This keeps me from trying to over Rev the ball, ending on top with spin and not roll. It also helped the swing as it needed to be toward the target.

    Thanks All!

Bowl1820, I had no idea a product like that existed. I'm going to look into it.

From what I've read, you should feel pressure on release on your palm between your index finger and middle finger upon release. Guess I'm not throwing it right myself, but I've never had not heard of any bowler with index finger issues. Tell us what fixes it please.
