Ball Pin raising up out of the ball

I noticed on one of the balls I have on my rack that the pin (the one that goes from the core to the outside of the ball, not the one you try to knock down) is sticking up slightly above the surface of the ball.

I looked at other balls and there seems to be a difference in feeling....like maybe a bump...but on the one ball, the pin seems to be sticking up about the thickness of two dollar bills on top of one another.

Is this something the pro shop can just sand down a tiny bit? Or is it something that just exists and nobody really cares about because the ball probably doesn't roll over the pin? I don't know. Never thought about it before.

I've never seen it before. I don't think that's normal though. i wonder if it could mess up the ball reaction? Try it and see Haha

I imagine it is unlikely the ball would have left the factory like that with the way surfaces are finished. One of the employees at the house I bowl at had a ball that started having a noise from the core (like a rattle) and the pin also moved. Turns out the core was damaged and had begun to break down some how.

One of my old Ebonite balls did that, and a short time later, it cracked.

That happens sometimes the Proshop can sand it down. I don't know if it will make it more likely to crack or not. I've seen balls that do that crack and I've seen them not.

Pins sticking up or popping out is kind of common, the shrinking/expansion of the ball materials is considered the main cause.

The proshop could cut it down or if it comes out just plug the hole.

Does this mean the ball might crack? Some do, some don't there's no way to tell.

It's undrilled, so it's less likely to crack. But it's still a possibility.

MWhite showed me a ball once that had "shrunk" over time. There's a round tool they use to determine if the ball is the proper size. Most pro shops are fairly lazy about ensuring the ball is balanced properly and meets USBC specifications like size. 99.5% of bowlers will never bowl in an event where such things even could possibly be measured...so why take the extra time to check all of that and drill balance holes, etc..?

We'll see. Hopefully it's just something they can slightly sand down when I get the ball drilled and hopefully the ball is still the proper size and the core isn't damaged. But, on the bright side, if it is...I have a lot of other undrilled options at my disposal.

I had a couple of old retired bowling balls that were just setting in the
back room and the pin on one of them raised up maybe 1/16 of an inch
and on the other ball the pin sank into the ball about 1/32 of an inch
and both of them cracked.

The one that had the raised pin was an old Track ball and the other one
that had the sunk in pin was a Columbia ball. I never had any problems
with any of my other retired bowling balls that were in the same room.
