Thread: No Inserts??

    Default No Inserts??

Just curious how many bowlers out there use no inserts. I just had a ball punched up and the PSO suggested I tried it without (due to pitch changes from wrist pain). I asked, wouldn't this result in a decrease in revs and he said not necessarily. Depends on the bowler and their style. He said if I do not care for it, I could just bring the ball back and he will make larger holes and put inserts in.

Anyone experiment with or without inserts? Curious on some input.

I have experimented with it. For me, didn't like it. I like the same feel in all of my balls and having the fingers possibly not all being the same would likely cause more issues.

I went for many years with no inserts then started using them in a new ball about 10 years ago and I never considered going back, however I never had a reason to consider it.
If he feels it might help your condition it might be worth a try, like he says it's easy to add them later.

Note if he drills the holes to make them bigger to put inserts in. it will make the bridge narrower, unless he made a wide bridge to begin with. A narrow bridge is more prone to cracking, also it could caus a warranty issue if a new ball.

    Bridges should be 1/4"

i know guys who bowled conventional for years, that have now switched to inserts. From speaking to them, my understanding is you normally go conventional when you rev the ball up to much with finger grips and want to cut back. However if he thinks it can help with wrist pain just try it. I once tried sarge easter grip just to try it, shot my first sanctioned 299, then stopped using it because it wasn't a consistent feel.
In my bag: Roto Grip Haywire, Ebonite Cyclone Gamebreaker, Brunswick danger zone vintage, Brunswick C-system Maxxed out and Columbia WD. High Game 300 (x3) high series 790...still searching for the 800.

Thanks for the tip. I failed to mention, I took an old unwanted ball and he punched THAT one up to see if i like the feel. I have like seven holes in ball now and it is just experimental. I will keep your advice in mind before I punch up my shinny new one.

I have one ball I use for just this purpose. Has been plugged several times just to try new things with grip etc.
