funny thing happen to me at practice last night.....

Last night I was practicing next to a gentleman and his wife and during the course of the night I noticed he was having major release issues. Now I am by no means a coach but it was plain to see the issue . He was releasing the ball way late with his hand waste high extended in front of him easily clearing the arrows. I introduced myself and started talking to him about his bowling ball, a brand new Strike king. It turns out he was trying to hook the ball but was not having much luck. I asked him to bring me the ball. I noticed it was drilled conventional and not only that but with him holding the ball he could easily fit two fingers side by side between the ball and the palm of his hand. Now this guy is a martial arts instructor so he has no weakness in his grip. I asked him why he had chose a conventional grip as apposed to a finger tip grip which I explained would naturally give the ball more revs allowing it to naturally hook. He had said the man never asked which grip he would like. At this point I knew who he was talking about so I said you got it drilled here right to which he said yes. I explained the importance of having a ball that fit well so you did not have to squeeze the daylights out of the ball to hold it hence his late release and virtually zero revs. I went back to bowling and about 30 minutes latter he came to me and said he had went to talk to the PSO(and I use that term very lightly) and asked him why he had not asked which grip he would like and about the fact that the span was way too short. The PSO asked him did that man in the wheelchair tell you this? Which he answered yes . The PSO asked him to come back and ask me how many bowling balls I had drilled? Now my fellow bowler said I hope I have not caused you any problems. I laughed and told him about using the same PSO until I had noticed my grip issues. I explained that it had cost me $250 to have 5 balls plugged and drilled correctly. I said I could drill a ball as good as he can using a Black and Decker hand drill. I passed by that PSO 3 times after that just wanting him to say something. I did laugh the rest of the night away and still am chuckling about it as I write this post. There is nothing like having a good PSO and yes I suggested him to fix the grip problem.

A good PSO is worth it's weight in gold. I can't imagine a PSO not asking about grip and drilling any type of ball conventional that isn't a plastic ball. My local PSO is decent but I think he's been pretty hit and miss, he did mine grip perfectly and I never have issues with pain or thumb swelling. But my other buddy he completely messed up with the thumb pitch and made the span being short and my buddy has all type of pain. He's tried to adjust the ball and replugged my friend's ball but he still has issue with thumb swelling and some pain.

I agree. Also, over time hands change from bowling. A good PSO can make the slight adjustments needed to keep a ball or drill a new one correctly.
