It's understandable if you actually go to Detroit and drive around. It's a ghost city. Just go to the casino in downtown and drive west for a mere half mile, and it's nothing but empty houses, lots where houses were razed, wrecked cars parked everywhere, and empty businesses. You'd honestly think it was the scene of a war or zombie apocalypse.
After the economic collapse of 2008, there were an estimated 70,000 empty buildings. I used to deliver to a few places as an OTR trucker into Detroit. Depending where I was going, I could drive for several city blocks without seeing a single person or open business.
Yes, I have family that lives in Detroit and it is going to take a lot to bring that city back. All the money has left and gone to the 'burbs.
