Posted this on another thread too. Is it really possible to use abralon pads by hand and make a difference in the ball surface in the few minutes you might have before league or tournament bowling? What do you do if you see someone using these during a tournament. Don't think I would care during a league but I might.
Things have been getting better but still confused about these abrasive pads.

What effect will the amount of oil in the ball have on trying to make a surface change?
This seems like a good thread to interject that any of you who subscribe to Bowling This Month should look up two great articles on ball surface authored by Ken Kasprzak. There is some really great scientific information in these articles, much of which will totally change the way you look at surface. Surprises include how quickly the surface on balls change, and how to most effectively touch up the surface.
The amount of oil already in the ball could block the ball's ability to absorb more oil.
That would require you to take extra effort to remove the oil on the surface of the ball before each shot.
If you are wiping the ball down, surface changes will respond as normal.
You just can't get lazy and forget to wipe the ball clean each time.
