The highest I've won in a single event is about $450...and that was at sweeps in Vegas a couple years back.

It's nicer to win the checks when it's a local event...with Vegas it's always about winning enough to cover the trip...and the trip always runs $450-$1250 (depending on how long you stay, what you do, how much gambling, shows, etc...)

I hope to join VDub soon...it would be nice to have a certain confidence level (and corresponding skill level)...where I could sub here and there...and have a reasonable shot at (at least) making up all the bowling costs...which for me are fairly low since I'm not in a league nor am I doing many tournaments...with my main expense (broken down by month) being:

Bowling Lessons: $150/month
Travel (to Vegas 1-2x per year): $100/month
Equipment: $49/month
Practice: $48/month
Sidepots/Brackets/Mystery Score: $46/month
Sub Fees: $40/month
Tournaments: $25/month

So, if I make just $450/month (roughly $112.50/week)...maybe win a few sidepots each week...5-6 brackets...could at least break even or thereabouts.

Absolutely this. My main expense was hotel which was inflated due to it being July 4th weekend. 2 years ago I paid $25. per night, this year though was $75.

Hotel was $300 on it's own.
Flight $41.00 using Southwest miles and adding early bird check in.
Rental car for 4 days $75.00
Entry to Nationals $180.00
Entry to Bowlers Journal $75.00
Entry to 40 Frame Game $140.00, entered twice
Misc food etc, maybe $150.00
Brackets entry $450.00 total
Approx trip total ~$1400


Bracket winnings $780.00
40 Frame game winnings $650.00
Winnings $1430.00

So all in all about even. So not so bad.

I didn't spend all I had budgeted for brackets, so I went home with cash in my pocket.

Flight is what kills it when it's on the west coast. I always try going in pairs or trio to cut hotel costs and car rental. Then shipping balls sucks too
