Thread: Bowling balls that don't seem to match their perfect score ratings.

Default Bowling balls that don't seem to match their perfect score ratings.

I have a Storm Hy road, a well known, much loved ball that has a rating of 170 something on the perfect scale, the ball seems to have way more motion that the Storm IQ 30th ann that rated at over 200. I can throw the two balls on the same lane on fresh oil and the HR comes back at least 5 boards more. I have played with the HR surface in the past but had it resurfaced back to OOB by the PSO so both are OOB.

I don't know numbers but I have a Storm Phaze and thought it would put my Track Heat to shame. I don't see much difference

If you do some searching you'll see many will tell you the "Perfect Scale" isn't perfect.

The main problem with it is, that some of the perfect scale calculations are based on the MFG.'s hook & length numbers (unless something has changed with how they do it.).

The trouble with that is each MFG. uses different criteria for determining those ratings, One companies hook rating of 50 might be another companies 45. Also if you have a ball that was rated two years ago, it might not have the same rating if they tested it today. Which could throw off how it compares to a newer balls rating today.

Covers are similar (both R2S cover just one hybrid and other Pearl)

Grit is the same (1500 polish)

RG is close (2.52 HR and 2.49 IQ)
Big difference is in the differential (.58 HR and .29 IQ)

Layout will also effect what you're seeing unless they are laid out identical

Many people don't have the ball drilled the best for them.
Phaze was a disappointment. Much weaker.
The new LT48 was much stronger than expected.
    But what do I know???

The hook rating scale is pretty much useless as you can not go by that
to measure one ball against another it is just there to give you an ideal
of what the ball is capable of.

Okay say for instance you and I have two of the same brand of bowling
balls drilled the same way with the weights all the same. Mine may out
hook yours or your ball may out hook mine by several boards on the same
condition playing the same line on the lane because I may throw mine a
different way than the way you throw your ball.

If you have ever watched Lane side Reviews review a ball they only have
the one ball drilled one way but have several different bowlers throwing it
with switch grips and hooking it differently even though it is only drilled
the one way because they each throw it different.

The only way to make the Perfect Scale perfect is to perfectly ignore it!

The perfect scale is anything but perfect. As mentioned earlier it's based mainly off of the manufactures ratings of the ball which I've seen change with new release quite often. Unless your going to have multiple people actually throw the ball on a similar condition and then rate them it's impossible to do. I prefer BTM's ratings which are at least based off people actually using the ball with multiple styles. Every ball to some point is pig in a poke you just don't know if it's pork chops or bacon.

The hyroad being stronger actually makes since with the numbers with the much higher differential. Also in most shops there is no such thing as restoring the ball back to OOB condition. Most proshops do not have the equipment to match what was at the factory they just simply follow storm's guidelines for surfacing the ball back as close as possible to the original conditions. These guidelines are closer in some instances than others. I can tell you from my experience that those guidelines aren't always what you see from the factory. Rotogrips Wreck it shows at being at 3k finish if you follow their guidelines for a 3k finish what you get looks nothing like what came from the factory. I've seen similar results from the Brunswick Mastermind Braniac that is supposedly 500 w/ rubbing compound.

I have both of those balls, too. Both are drilled similarly; however, I've used Reacta Shine on the Hy-Road when needed and I've taken off the polish on the IQ Tour 30 with a 3000 grit pad. The IQ Tour 30 is much stronger than the HR for me and I get lots more room for error with it. Looking forward to playing with the Wreck-It. I'm guessing that it will even have more strength right out of the box.

    .
This is so very true. Lane Side Reviews has 3 or 4 different people throwing these balls. Wayne is low speed & low rev. Scoops is med speed & med rev. Rob is high speed & high rev. Cam has even more speed & revs.

You can see how each one throws the ball much differently than the other, and it gives you the best idea as to how they can control what they are doing.

I'm so close to the way Wayne throws the ball it's uncanny. I also use the same drilling layouts as they do and I get the same results. And while I've never tossed a 300, I've been close. Just my own inability to get the same release for 10 frames has prevented this.

What is also true, is, that my PSO has agreed that every drilling angle I have given him and likes it. #TeamLSR
