One lane with 35' of oil and the other with 55' ?????? My pso Tom bowled against belmo and they were both throwing straight balls on the 55' pattern. I've never seen that before.

They may have been able to score with a more normal line, but it's hard to beat your opponent when they are taking advantage of the help on the lane, and you aren't.

Hold area isn't strictly about the lack of friction.
If the oil is thick enough, it acts like a "mountain range" with a height that is difficult to summit.
They weren't "straight" balls, they just hooked MUCH later than you're accustomed to seeing.
When was the last time you saw actual straight balls carry as well as what you saw in this tournament?

How many boards are required to be considered not straight?
3 boards in 10 feet is more angle than if you released on the 1 board, and went straight at the pocket 60 feet later.
Add to that the consistency of exiting the pattern on that same board due to the wall of oil, and you're much better off than attempting to shoot straight from the corner.
I didn't mean a line drive...lol.. but they sure weren't bellying the ball and as far as carry is it really hook or revs? Even a straight ball can hit hard with good revs I would think

What is the purpose of bellying the ball?
Does that purpose apply on 50 feet oil with a massive wall at 15 board?
You need the ball to hook to achieve the amount of deflection that gives the best chance of knocking all 10 pins down.
If you could release the ball from a couple lanes over, and loft the ball such that it lands on your lane, then you could throw it straight and achieve the equivalent of hook.
Since that technique isn't encouraged, you learn to hook the ball.
To hook the ball, you need good revs.
But good revs, that don't cause the ball to hook (think plastic ball) are no better than no revs at all.
Deflection is based on impact angles, and momentum.
Understanding deflection would require some familiarity with physics.
One of the laws you learn in physics is during a collision between two objects, the sum of the objects momentum before the collision is the same as the sum of the objects momentum after the collision.
