Hey guys another total newbie question. When I use house balls, I tend to hold the ball with the tips of my fingers just inside the ball maybe to the second joint of my finger at most. Is that a thing? Someone was asking me if I used a conventional grip or another type of grip? I know this doesn't make munch sense.

A conventional grip is where the the fingers go in up to the second knuckle. In other words two thirds of each finger is in the hole. Most house balls are drilled for this way of gripping. Most serious bowlers will have their bowling balls drilled with a fingertip grip, only one third of each finger is in the hole.
Generally, the entire thumb is in the ball. the exception being those who don't put any part of the thumb in the ball.

watch some you tube videos on slow motion fingertip hook release.Notice the thunb comes out first and the fingers turn the ball.....and only the tip of your fingers are in the ball, a house ball will NOT do this..

This isn't happening because of the grip (conventional vs fingertip) it's how the bowler holds the ball prior to release.

You can suitcase a fingertip ball just like a conventional.

Take any of the pros who use a Sarge-Easter grip (ring finger conventional span), if you shortened their middle finger span, they don't instantly convert to a suitcase release.

It's usually better to have your own ball, drilled to fit your hand, than to use a house ball. Just the time saved by not having to search
for a ball that's the right weight and fit makes it worthwhile. If the pro shop does a good good job drilling the ball to fit your hand you will get used to the fingertip grip very quickly.
